Special Occasions

TWO EIDS:

EID RAMADAN:
Marking the end of fasting the holy month of Ramadan(the fourth pillar of islam).
Muslims are required to observe fast from dawn to dusk for one lunar month every year. The beginning of the month of Ramadan starts when the moon is sighted and the end of the month ends also by the sighting of the moon.
People refrain from eating,drinking,cursing,back-biting,and marital relations all day till sunset.
When this month ends,we celebrate the fulfillment of the fourth pillar of islam.
-Special communal prayer is held in open places on the first day of Eid.
-Families visit(estranged families are re-united).
-Neighbors are visited and candies and beverages are offered.

EID AL-HAJJ:
During the days of the pilgrimage to Makkah(fifth pillar of Islam). As for people who have not gone to Makkah this is what they do on this eid:
-Special communal(mass) prayer on the first day.
-People have their sheep(uDdhiyah) slaughtered in the name of Allah, then this sheep is divided into three parts:
One goes to the poor, one goes to the neighbors or relatives,or friends(as a present),the third is taken by the one who made the sacrifice.

-
Visits are made to relatives and friends to give glad wishes of the occasion.
