When All Else Fails, Live by Faith
Human beings react to stress and distress in differing ways.  When things start to go wrong, the way we react can say a lot about our character.  With Christians, the way we respond to hard times can say a lot about our faith in God.  God is sovereign (exercising unqualified and undisputed supreme authority), omniscient (having infinite awareness, understanding and insight), and always in control (omnipotent).  Yet when our life seems to be falling apart, we often start to question God.

In the Old Testament book of Habakkuk, the prophet Habakkuk is doing just that-- questioning God.  Habakkuk saw the righteous falling prey to the wicked.  He asked the Lord God how long He would let it happen.  The Lord told Habakkuk that it would not last forever.  Then God reminded Habakkuk that
"The just shall live by his faith" Habakkuk 2:4

Habakkuk really took these words to heart, for at the end of his book he paints a vivid picture of the sustaining faith that we should have in God:

"Although the fig tree shall not blossom,
neither shall fruit be in the vines;
the labour of the olive shall fail,
and the fields shall yield no meat;
the flock shall be cut off from the fold,
and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

Yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.

The LORD God is my strength,
and he will make my feet like hinds' feet,
and he will make me to walk upon mine high places."
Habakkuk 3:17-19

Habakkuk had little to be thankful for except that the Lord his God was in control and would sustain him.  How great it would be for all of us to have this kind of faith and joy! That's what God wants for us.  We need only to rely on Him.
