NORTH AMERICA
On the right here is depicted a Pow Wow Drum, from the Sioux Indians.
Beaten in a monotonous rhythm, the dancers around the fire get into a trance state. Used mainly for dancing rituals.
This framedrum here is a shaman's healing drum, by tradition known to have cleansing properties. This particular one is made of elk hide and white cedar wood. The materials are very personal, since it's a ritual instrument.
SOUTH AMERICA
Here you see an Inca bass drum called a Bombo, native to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The wooden rim is essential for accenting the traditional music. Quite often the mounted sheepskins still have the wool on it, to give an even deeper sound to the bass. |
