It's the future of Windows ... Today!
But as we get further out, future Windows versions promise to be even more exciting. The next Windows Server release, Windows Server Release 2 (R2), will ship in mid-2005 and merge various out-of-band updates into the core OS. Microsoft will also ship SQL Server 2005 ("Yukon") and Visual Studio 2005 ("Whidbey") in 2005. The next major Windows client release, code-named Longhorn, is due in mid-2006 and will include Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing (Palladium) architectural changes, as well as a new 3D video-driven user interface ("Aero"), new low-level APIs ("Avalon" and "WinFX"), integrated anti-virus features, and a SQL Server-based storage engine called Windows Future Storage (WinFS); Longhorn will also be accompanied by a new Windows Server version (Longhorn Server), a new MSN version, and a new Microsoft Office. A future Windows Server release, code-named Blackcomb, will likely ship two to three years after Longhorn.
