News for Thursday, october 7, 2004 EU: No Settlement for Microsoft European Union (EU) Competition Chief Mario Monti said this week that the time for a settlement in the Microsoft antitrust case has long since passed. Monti's comments came a week after EU and Microsoft lawyers faced off in the European Court of First Instance, which will determine whether to stay the EU's decision against the software giant during the company's appeal. Microsoft has recently expressed renewed interest in attempting to settle the case. More Microsoft Abruptly Pulls MSN Messenger 7.0 Beta Citing a security hole in one of MSN Messenger 7.0's new features, Microsoft suspended the product's beta version this week, according to various reports, so it can rethink how to implement the feature. MSN Messenger 7.0 includes a feature called Winks that lets MSN Messenger users send each other animated graphics and sounds. Attackers can use the feature maliciously, however, so Microsoft has stripped it from the product's most recent beta version, which the company will make available to testers next week. To protect testers against potential problems, all MSN Messenger 7.0 users will be forced to "downgrade" to the publicly shipping version 6.2 when they log on to the MSN Messenger service today. More News for Wednesday, October 6, 2004 Microsoft Unveils MSN TV 2 On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled its next generation MSN TV 2 Internet & Media Player, a set-top box for the den that displays Internet content like the Web and Email, and digital media content from your networked home PCs, on your television set. MSN TV 2 comes complete with a wireless keyboard and remote control, and requires a subscription service for users to take advantage of its Internet-related functionality.
