89 Mustang GT Junk Yard Twin Turbo Project This site is for those wanting to turbocharge on a budget!! |
3/01/05 Put together a 393w with the same Vic jr. heads and some JE pistons and a carb this time. No times slips yet. 8/10/03 Running again, best times so far are 6.60's @ 106 and 10.50's @ 135 with 13-14 psi. 6/01/03 I have decide to go with a 351w that I had laying around. It is a stock block crank and rods. I had some used hypereutectic pistons with 22cc dish, that will work for now. I went with some Vic Jr. heads that were cc to 70cc thanks to TEA . That gave me a blower friendly 8.25 compression ratio. 5/13/03 Been awhile since the last update, the 302 was getting pretty tired, with 147,000 miiles I was beginning to get some pretty good blowbye to say the least. I found 5 callapsed rings upon dissassembly. 5/23/02 New timeslips 6.99 1/8 @ 102.60 and 10.99 @ 116.20 1/4 with 15psi. It looks like the tranny needs new clutches, as I shifted into high gear the tach went to 6500 and it never moved, as you can tell by the slow 1/4 mph I had to let off, but it was still my first 6 sec 1/8 and 10sec 1/4 mile pass in the car so it wasn't all bad. 4/15/02 Added new pictures Turbo pics 3/31/02 Finished up installing the roll cage, C4 with transbrake and 4300 stall, 31 line spool and axles maybe it will 60ft.. I also boxed the upper and lower control arms, welded the torque boxes and replaced the bushings. I am going to try a MSD 6BTM boost timing contol we'll see how it works. Hopefully some track times soon!! 2/28/02 Just thought I would update the website, I pulled the trans and found the splines on the torque converter were stripped, I inspected the C4 and it is fine. In my search for a new conveter I ran across a complete C4 with transbrake, 4300 stall, SFI shield etc. I will most likely be putting this unit in the car. Now the search is on for some good axles and spool. I will putting the tranny in as soon as I finish up on the roll cage and hopefully get back to the track by spring. 11/10/01 Just an update on the turbo project, I made it back to the track about three more times since 10/16 and I must say it has been nothing to brag about! I blew off a few lines (the ones I didn't crimp) blew a couple of turbo flange gaskets (should have used a metal style gasket) and had to reweld the headers in a couple of places, nothing major. NEW UPDATE 10/16/01 TRACK TIMES!! After two bad passes a week ago from heavy detination I made it bad to the track with some good gas. Here is the timeslip and man was I surprized! 7.02@104.60mph 1/8 mile, note the best the car had run pre-turbo's was 7.80@88mph the increase in hp is more than I ever expected this early on, the pass was very smooth and just continued to accelerate hard all the way through definately a 6 second capable car and looking for 10's in the 1/4@130 mph 60ft times were on the slow side 1.75. The car could use a transbrake bad, I need to be able to spool up before the car leaves. 9/28/01 Just got back from my first test drive, I would have never thought two little turbo's could make so much noise, it sounded like a tornado under the hood. The car feels like it pulls really hard, much harder than the same motor with 150hp NOS. If its turns out not to be a bit faster it is all still worth the time and effort, just the sound the twins make as they spool up and the horrific whooooooshhhh from 3000-6000 made it worth while. 9/26/01 It Runs!! After a couple of weeks of thrashing I managed to get the car running. Still alot of tuning issues to work out. Can't wait to make a pass. 9/15/01 Made a trip to the local Semi salvage yard, picked up a bunch of mandrel bent piping and silicone hoses and clamps, if your looking at the budjet buildup this is the way to go. I also acquired an intercooler but was unable to make it work. |
A tip I picked up of the JYTurbo list, bend the ends of your pipe this will keep them together under boost. |
9/7/01 Managed to get the C4 Trans in the car this week, just a note to those switching from a T5 to a C4 the trans mount for the T5 mount will have to be modified to work with the C4, the C4 sits about a 1 1/2 closer to the front of the car. Just grind the cylinder mounts loose from the main mount and slide forward and reweld. |
Slip the cylinder mounts forward and reweld |
Grind the tack welds |
9/3/01 Added new pics 9/1/01 Making a little progress, sure looks alot better than it did. |
8/30/01 Just an update on the project, the transmission is back together, just finished painting under the hood, I have decided to go fuel injection, I purchased a used 75 pro m and 36lb injectors, and a new TFS-R intake. I know have both headers completed and I will be putting the motor and trans back in the car soon, still working on mounting the intercooler and plumbing from the turbo to the IC. I have also decided to try water/alcohol injection along with the IC. The picture below shows the rough placement of the twins. I've since removed the motor to clean and paint under the hood |
7/14/01 Well finally got around to tearing into the C4, other than the valve body being pretty dirty it was still in pretty good shape. I ordered some raybestos blue clutch plates for the front and rear drums, new bands and seals, I also decided since the valve body was in such bad shape to goahead and order the PA reverse manual VB. Purchased a used TCI streetfighter 3000-3500 stall for $150 off ebay. With help I'm hoping to have the tranny back together by next weekend. As far as the motor goes I am leaving the same combo, Ebrock heads (6025), E cam, the motor does have a new crank but its still standard bore with stock rings an pistons (145K) but the compression is still good, I sure it will have plenty of blowbye, well see how it does. Finished the oil pan drain lines, I cut a 3/4 hole in the pan (make sure this hole is above the oil level or it will not drain) and welded in two pipe nipples |
In the picture below you can see the oil return, I welded in a 1/2 npt steel coupling. |
07/5/01 Still gathering parts for the turbo project, I now have 3 Garrett T03's with .63 ar's, I have a set of Flowtech shorty headers that I will be flipped point toward the front of the motor. I will be using a old C4 thats been in sitting around for the past 15 years waiting for a new home. I will be making my first attempt rebuilding a automatic trans. |
6/14/01 The Junk Yard Twin Turbo Project Started! Gathering parts for the turbo project, this is what I have so far.. 2 T3 Garretts off a 86 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe with the .63 A/R exuast housings. |
