With the first semester behind us this school year, we've begun feeding migrating birds, moving composting bins & have started thinking about garden seed. We have moved into our new gym & primary school.
News students, shown @ right are involved in more than just reporting news for our student paper, each student is also responsible for revising 1 page monthly at this web site. ....... The class recently toured The Marshall Mountain Wave newspaper; Serenity Farms Bread in Leslie and Van Buren County Recycling Center in Clinton as part of a hands on field trip dealing with local career choices.
Join our students, teachers, staff & community on a journey through our organic garden, bird habitat, composting project and culture in the magnificience of the deep Arkansas Ozarks.
As the crow flies, we are located less than 10 miles south of the Buffalo National River in Searcy County and less than 2 miles from the Ozark National Forest.
Our garden began six years ago as a landscape improvement when students and teachers removed blackberry briars and poison ivy from an abandoned piece of school yard. Students, teachers & community have all contributed to our school garden. Some have even donated plants to help improve our garden.
Our school recycles it's waste paper and magazines, and is maintained by our Environmental Science Class. Most of our recycled paper is made into kitty litter or tar paper although about 1% of our recycled paper is laid down as worm bedding in our composting bins.
For the 2000/2001 school year, we recycled 4500 pounds of paper, which would have been landfilled unless we had cared enough to intervene. Also our worms produced almost 500 pounds of vermi-compost. |
