.: Happy New Year!
We Finally have the Top Ten of 2003 List here! Here it goes! Enjoy!
WJZ's Top Ten Events of
2003
10.) The Subtle Changes
In the fall of 2003, WJZ made such a very gradual and subtle
change to their set, changing their backdrop of the city, from a orange-ish
tint to a blueish tint. It looks better overall, but they were very subtle
about it.
9.) Update of
Graphics
As many recall, WJZ changed their actual Graphics in 2002, getting
rid of the many colors to their now blue and yellow. But these changes
were gradual. And this year most of the old graphics were dumped in favor
for better and more modern graphics. The First warning Weather open and
graphics was updated, The Return was updated, even the Open was updated,
showcasing Air superiorty with Sky Eye Chopper 13, and in the talent open,
they showcase the camera, which is the key to live programming on WJZ.
There are still some updates needed but they are working on it slowly but
surely.
8.) CBS O&O Renovations
2003 brought many changes to CBS O&O's. Many of them dumped
their well known names in favor for the generic "CBS [Channel
Number", KYW and KDKA Dumped their famous Anklepants logos for
generic Arial font logo, and some dumped their colorful graphics for
graphics of just blue. The only ones that seems to stay the same were WJZ,
KPIX and WFOR.
7.) Talent
The Talent has been somewhat quiet this year, not changing alot of
reporters. The biggest change however was when Christa Delcamp left for
WHDH in Boston, and Reporter Sharon Lee took her place on Eyewitness News
Morning Edition Weekend. But two people have joined the Eyewitness News
Family this year, Adam May from Kentucky, and Mary Bubala, formerly from
WMAR, has joined WJZ Full Time.
6.) Ms. Kellye Lynn
In Early 2003, Kellye Lynn, after taking maternity leave for quite
a while, finally gave birth to a baby boy. And then after being absent
Kellye Lynn returned to Eyewitness News at Noon in the Spring. Kellye
Still reports on Healthwatch and still Anchors EWN at Noon.
5.) Pilot Roy Taylor
WJZ's prized chopper guy, Roy Taylor was approached by WBAL this
year, and was given an offer. offers were giving back and forth, until
finally, WJZ lost Roy Taylor to WBAL. This was quite a blow to WJZ, but
they did manage to get a new pilot, Capt. Mike Perry, but then the unthinkable
happened......which was that.....[look below]
4.) Sky Eye Chopper 13
Crashes
Sky Eye Chopper 13 Crashed after landing at the airport that it
stays at while not in maintance. Nobody was hurt, but the chopper [used since
its debut in 1996] was badly damaged. But a month later, a new sky eye
chopper 13 was in the air once again.
3.) Hizzy Izzy
Coverage
In september, one of the biggest Hurricanes hit the region and
caused major damage including the flooding of fells point. WJZ had
non-stop coverage of Hurricane Isabel [or hizzy izzy], up half the night
with coverage, and reporters in Baltimore, DC, Ocean City, Fells Point,
Virginia Beach, and Kitty Hawk, NC. But Izzy had nothing on the mess
of....[look below]
2.) Blizzard 2003
The blizzard of 2003 brought 2 feet and more of snow on the
region. The WJZ Snow Show was on all of that week, breaking into regular
programming frequently, and keeping us informed on the storm itself. WJZ
have live reporters and Bob Turk and the First Warning Weather Team
Tracking down everything.
And finally the Number 1 Event of 2003
1.) The Promos
This Year WJZ had many many many promos for EWN. For Every Big
story, EWN would have a Promo, during the newscast, and during
commercials. It is so many, that for New Years Eve, WJZ's Morning Edition,
the anchors, every time there was a mention about new years eve, they
would play the wjz promo for the new years eve celebration in baltimore.
As many promos as WJZ has, it still makes you laugh how much WJZ wants to
promote their Newscast, but with Live coverage, and reporters everywhere,
WJZ Earned the right to promote their newscasts and they are doing a great
job too.
