There are three major steps in the RNY procedure:
1. The stomach is stapled horizontally to create a small stomach pouch that will hold a small amount of food (about two tablespoons). An alternative to stapling is TRANSECTION, which separates the newly created pouch from the remainder of the stomach mass. Transection seems to lower the possibility of Staple Line Disruption (SLD).
2. A Roux-n-Y limb is created which will be used to empty food from the newly created stomach pouch. This limb bypasses the duodenum and the extra stomach mass.
3. A small connection is made connecting the Roux-n-Y limb to the newly created stomach pouch. |
