Greyhound Awareness Week ~ May 21st - 28th 2005
Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of 1,000`s of greyhounds prevented.
Street stalls and/or demos will be taking place throughout the country. Anyone who would like to take part, please contact Greyhound Action for leaflets, posters, petition forms etc.
Here in the Midlands, demonstrations will take place throughout the week outside Coventry Greyhound Stadium at Brandon. Please contact your local group to find out what events are happening near you. If no events are planned, why not organise your own!
Greyhound Derby Day of Action ~ Saturday July 2nd
On the day of the William Hill Greyhound Derby Final a large number of bets are placed on the dogs. A percentage of the money wagered will go to support greyhound racing.
Greyhound Action supporters will be picketting betting shops (especially William Hill) in order to educate punters about the death and suffering of dogs at the hands of the greyhound racing industry and to persuade them (if they must gamble) to bet instead on activities (eg football and cricket) which do not involve animals. Please let Greyhound Action know if you`d like to hold a betting shop picket in your town. To put in advance orders for leaflets and "You Bet.......They Die" posters (all free of charge - but donations gratefully received), contact Greyhound Action.

Greyhound Rememberance Day ~ Sunday July 24th
Greyhound racing in the UK began on July 24th, 1926 at Belle Vue, Manchester. On the nearest Sunday to this date every year we stage an event, called Greyhound Rememberance Day, in memory of the hundreds of thousands of dogs that have been abused and killed by the greyhound racing industry since that day.
The event involves the laying of flowers outside greyhound stadiums and we are hoping that some of the people taking part will take their rescued greyhounds along, to provide a good photo opportunity for the local media and help spread awareness of the need to boycott greyhound racing (as well as encouraging the adoption of ex-racing greyhounds).
As it did last year, Greyhound Rememberance Day will form part of International Greyhound Memorial Weekend, which is held worldwide, and in 2004 consisted of over 50 events in the USA and several European countries. Click here to read a report with pictures from the West Midlands events in 2004
This year in the West Midlands, remembrance events will once again most likely take place at the following tracks - more details soon.
Monmore Green Stadium, Sutherland Ave, Monmore Green, Wolverhampton.
Perry Barr Stadium, Aldridge Rd, Perry Barr, Birmingham.
Hall Green Stadium, York Rd, Hall Green, Birmingham.
Coventry Stadium, Rugby Rd, Brandon, Nr. Coventry.
