Protesters out in force in Coventry to oppose the new greyhound track
On Saturday, around 30 protesters attended a mass leafletting and public education event in Coventry City Centre. Between 11am & 5pm several large banners were displayed in the Bull Yard and many 1,000`s of leaflets were handed out to the general public. Many campaigners brought along their rescued greyhounds to encourage people to take leaflets and have a chat about the horrendous cruelty involved in the greyhound racing industry when the dogs don`t meet the grade or no longer win races!
And on Wednesday evening, 35 protesters held a peaceful demonstration outside Coventry Stadium, as race goers turned up for the opening nights racing at the new greyhound track. Situated on the very busy A428 Rugby Road, the stadium is a great place to hold a demonstration. 4 large banners and numerous placards were displayed for passing traffic to see why we were there. The demo lasted nearly 2 hours and was successful in creating much media attention with several reporters and a TV camera covering the story. Read the newspaper article about the demo below.
Further protests will be held during the opening week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6pm and Coventry Against Greyhound Exploitation(CAGE) intend to hold regular demos in the future. If you would like to get involved with demonstrations, leaflet stalls, and other events at the track or in Coventry City Centre, contact CAGE. Email soledad_john@hotmail.com or call 07771 953465. Placard protest greets punters

Coventry Evening Telegraph - Apr 15 2004

Animal rights campaigners lined the road outside Coventry Stadium to heckle race-goers last night.

Dozens of protesters bearing placards with slogans such as "You Bet - They Die" and "Dying To Entertain You" shouted at cars pulling into the site.

The protests will continue throughout the week.

John Curtis, of the Coventry Against Greyhound Racing group, said he was pleased with the response they were getting from passing pedestrians and drivers, who beeped horns to show their support.

He said: "It is a tragedy that the industry is expanding but we now must look at longer term education.

"We are meant to be a nation of animal lovers but in my experience the public are very good at turning a blind eye when it comes to cruelty."

Rugby animal rights campaigner Janet Cummings said she was pleased at the strength of the turnout.

She said: "This is very a very powerful demonstration and we are making people aware of what is going on.

"No-one can miss us here and we are still hoping to get the racing stopped altogether.

"We want to stop firms booking Christmas parties at the stadium. A lot of people do that but this is animal cruelty and there's nothing to celebrate here," she added.
