"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America."
THE ATTACKS
- President Bush
In the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, hijackers crashed two jets into the World Trade Centre. Aerican Airlines Flight 11, carrying 81 passengers and 11 crew members en route from Boston to Los Angeles, slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Centre in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m. About 15 minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175, also en route from Boston to Los Angeles, with 56 passengers and 9 crew members aboard, crashed into the south tower (Below left and centre). The collisions both created giant explosions inside the tower that reached the exterior of the buildings (Below right).
There was an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people in the towers when the jets crashed into them and it is still not known how many were killed in the collision. Thousands of people were already at their desks in both towers. About 80 chefs, waiters and kitchen porters were also in the Windows on the World restaurant on the 106th floor. Many who worked for firms located in the crash zone were killed instantly. Those on the floors above were already doomed, their escape routes cut off by fire. The ones that did survive the collision were still in great danger.
The attacks stunned the nation and brought the government to a halt. For the first time ever, the Federal Aviation Administration closed all U.S. airports and immediately grounded all air craft in the United States as well as Canada and other surrounding countries.
