When The Angels Laughed
When I was very young.
I wanted to be much older.
A famous ballerina or a movie star
With a handsome prince to hold her.
And the angels laughed.
And I grew a little more,
And ballet slippers hurt my feet.
A famous adventurer, I'd be
Very rugged, but looking sweet.
And the angels laughed.
And I became a teen,
Neither girl, nor yet a woman.
One day up, the next one down.
Just practicing being human.
And the angels laughed.
Then the day I found myself
Dressed in white, I was a bride.
Like the doll upon the bed.
My father smiled, my mother cried.
And the angels laughed.
One day I found my proper niche,
Was not like any other.
Holding close a beautiful child.
And now, I was a mother.
And the angels laughed.
The time closed in on my world,
Brought with it, fear and strife.
Awoke one morning to realize,
I didn't want to be a wife.
And the angels laughed.
Picking up my childhood dreams,
I ventured forth again.
"I must be someone else!", I said
With chaos in my brain.
And the angels laughed.
And here I am with pen in hand,
No fame, no chance at glory.
"Come in! Walk through my mind!"
And chuckle at my story!
By now? The angels are hysterical
