The department stores downtown at Christmas were both spectacular and grand.
I remember them well, as I walked in holding my Mother's hand.
The elevator with its operator on the stool, "step to the rear of the car", she would say.
"Third floor, ladies millinery, watch your step please;
I was in dismay.
The counters with the smiling clerks were wonderful to behold;
The ladies hosiery in boxes, wrapped in tissue so fine,
were ready to be sold.
The floors were explored one by one, and the front window down on the street held a beautiful Christmas display for all the see.
The children stood and looked with laughter and glee.
The mannequins were dressed in holiday fare;
I took them all in with a mesmerized stare.
I wish I could go back in time and walk into that big revolving door once again;
And have a shopping spree with an old friend.
