The Pirate

The Podunk Pirates, the latest unlikely CFFL champions, are the perfect representatives of the modern fantasy football franchise - down last year, up this year and ... who knows about next season? How unforeseen was the success of the 2002 Podunk Pirates?  Well, let’s just say it took seven years for the Podunk Pirates to taste their first championship.  Anyone attempting now to pick next season’s champion might as well close their eyes and point at a team.  Vegas had an early prediction that the Namco Eagles would be the team to beat in 2003 under the legs of Charger’s star LaDainian Tomlinson.

The Pirates, who stunned the 5.4-point favorite Woodstock Warheads this weekend, are the second franchise to remove the trophy from the banks of the Cove.  Dunn’s MaSSacre was the first to accomplish this task in 2000 by defeating the Hogan Heroes.  The road to the championship game was not an easy one for the Pirates.  They finished last season with a dismal 6-8 record and failed to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year.  They began the 2002 season with a devastating loss to the Molly McGuires 133-80.  To add insult to injury, they were faced with two one point demoralizing regular season losses at the hands of the Woodstock Warheads and Namco Eagles.  These crucial losses destroyed any hope of the Pirates receiving a first round playoff bye.  They went on to defeat the Namco Eagles and the MaSSacre to earn the right to play in the big dance.

The championship weekend started with the Pirates jumping ahead {15 - -2} with the early lead over the Warheads.  New York Giant’s tight end, Jeremy Shockey, tied the game on a 7-yard fourth-quarter TD catch against the Philadelphia Eagles which by games end added fifteen points to the Pirates cause.

The Pirates success continued into Sundays NFL games where Daunte Culpepper threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Vikings held on to beat the Lions 38-36.  Jason Elam, a free agent who has said he will not return to Denver next season, hit three crucial field goals of 44, 54 and 21 yards for Denver’s only points in the first half. Elam finished the weekend with twenty-one important fantasy points.

The Warheads, who already won a CFFL championship and returning to the big dance from last year, did not go down with out a valiant effort from Todd Heap and Shaun Alexander.  Heap had an incredible game with seven catches for 146 yards and a score.  Alexander finished the regular season by adding thirteen fantasy points to the Warheads arsenal .

In the end, the Podunk Pirates were too much for the first seed, Woodstock Warheads, and defeated them in the 2002 CFFL Championship game.

Old Friends Go-Head-To-Head
Associated Press
The semi final game between the second seed, MaSSacre, and the Podunk Pirates was a nail biter to say the least.  These two “old friends” from Tantasqua Regional High School used to battle together on the soccer field, but now they found themselves battling for a spot in the championship game.  The MaSSacre built an astonishing thirty point lead going into Monday Night Football.  The Pirates had three significant players left Plaxico Burress, Keyshawn Johnson and Martin Gramatica.  The game was going the MaSSacre’s way, especially after Tampa Bay elected to remove a fifty-one yard field goal by Gramatica, until the final minutes of regulation.  The Pirates were soon filled with a glimmer of hope right after the Pirate’s management was thinking of their concession speech.  Johnson caught an important pass in the fourth quarter which added to his one hundred and seventeen-yards.  With less than two minutes remaining the Pirates were down by eight points with one Buccaneer’s drive left.  Keyshawn caught a seventeen-yard touchdown with a minute to go, which gave the Pirates a 72-70 victory over their good friend.

2002 CFFL Playoffs First Round
Victory was Bitter Sweet
Podunk Pirates vs. Namco Eagles
The Podunk Pirates had the unfortunate first round match-up between their father’s team the Namco Eagles.  It was the sixth seed vs. the third seed and the Pirate’s management was disappointed about the match-up.

“It’s a let down when you have to face your father in the playoffs. You’ve been pulling for him all season, except for the head-to-head games during the regular season, and now one of you are going to be eliminated.” Podunk Pirate’s Owner & General Manager Jeremy Miller.
The Namco Eagles broke a five-year draught from not making post-season play.  The Eagles drafted very well in the last two drafts and have an outstanding franchise player in LaDainian Tomlinson.
The Podunk Pirates were lucky against their father because Culpepper had a season best forty-five-point game.  The Pirates went on to win 105-73.

The Pirate’s Season was Nearly Faulk’
The Pirate’s 2002 season was moving along very well until the team’s MVP, Marshall Faulk, went down with a high ankle sprain only a few weeks before the regular season concluded.   Teams can go down as quickly as they can go up.  With twelve teams in the league nobody's very deep these days, and one injury, like the one that sidelined and hampered Faulk for the season, can send a potential champion right back into the pack.

"It's a fact of life these days," Podunk Pirate’s Director of Football Operations David Miller said Monday. "Every team loses players to injury from season to season.  Every team is forced to lose players it doesn't want to lose. I'd be happy to start next season with a health Faulk, but we all know that losing players to injury is just part of the game."

New Orleans running back, Deuce McAllister, emergence into a NFL “Stud” was a blessing in disguise for the CFFL champions.

“I’d have to say if it wasn’t for McAllister, I don’t know if we would’ve defeated the Greyhawks in week fourteen, or make the playoffs for that matter.  The CFFL, similar to the NFL, has become very competitive across the board.  In today’s game you don’t find the depth at the running back position as you did in the past.” Podunk Pirate’s Owner & General Manager Jeremy Miller said Monday.

What Now?
The Podunk Pirates put together an unbelievable season.  At the beginning they were optimistic that they would be competitive, but in the end they exceeded all expectations by winning it all.

What will management look forward to in the preseason?

"We will first sit back and enjoy this championship. You never know if you will be able get back to the big game.  It took us six long seasons to get back.  I would look for the Pirates to have a busy summer moving a few players and draft picks.  We think Shockey is a legitimate keeper and we will continue to monitor Faulk’s ankle in the off-season.” Podunk Pirate’s Director of Football Operations David Miller said Tuesday.

What will be the Pirate’s goal in 2003?

“Every team wants the chance to repeat, which is very unlikely in today’s game.  With that said, we would like to see a franchise that has not won a championship to taste it.  Everyone in our league deserves the opportunity.” Podunk Pirate’s Owner & General Manager Jeremy Miller said Tuesday.
