David may have been born in Maryland since he was only three years old when his father, Matthew, originally entered Virginia. It is thought he was likely born during the migration from civilization to wilderness that generally was accomplished in several moves.
The research comes from Nicholas County History books and West Virginia Archives at the Capitol Complex in Charleston, West Virginia as well as the series of " Mountain Memories" by Dennis Deitz. David was 48 years old when he married the 27 year old Christina Odell. The Nutter's were active in Bethel Methodist Church at Poe on Laurel Creek, the oldest Church (1810) in Nicholas County. David was elected Senior Class leader in 1782. Their farm was on Backus Run, which David sold and then purchased property at Hominy Falls, Nicholas County, West Virginia from his father-in-law, Jeremiah in 1827. David later purchased 200 acres at Kessler's Cross Lanes.
Grandison was Christina's child from a previous marriage.
In 1814, David Nutter and family came here from Monroe county and settled where Rev. A. N. Rippetoe lives. He was very industrious. -- Afterwards he sold his farm on which he first settled and moved to the farm, cleared out by Robert Foster, where he ended his days. His second wife to whom he was married in this county, was a daughter of Jerry Odell, the Revolutionary soldier.--She is still alive and about 93 years old.
