| We're in San Francisco this week at Cobbs Comedy Club with talent scouts Josh Gomez of the TV comedy "Chuck" and French Stewart from "3rd Rock From The Sun." San Francisco is known as the home to the alternative, and the comics hailing from the city are no exception. The odd acts range from a guy wearing a cape who plays his head, yes plays his head, to a fire-setting solo act. The laughs start with The Meehan Brothers, who come on stage with their surreal Marx Brothers-esque act.
As the auditions continue, a freaky break-dancing monk gets laughs but not of the amusement kind -- more like discomfort. Shortly afterwards, Sky and Nancy Collins from the OC Country Club bring their PTA best to the stage. Joe Klocek follows with his clever spiel about vodka and sex. The funny doesn't stop there -- Joe is joined in the evening showcase by Candy Churilla, Johnathon Thymus and Jeff Dye. The talent scouts are encouraged by their group of polished and raw talent when Jesse Case talks about his PT Cruiser that doesn't have cruise control. Hmm. Is it me? After Sky and Nancy do their routine, Iliza comes out with jokes about answering the phone out of breath. The good only get better with Johnathon Thymus's reverse puppetry, which has to be seen to be believed, and Jeff Dye, who declares he will make them laugh no matter what, because he's a pro! In the second half of the evening The Meehan Brothers do their street performance humor about Irish tanning heroes. No sooner have they left the stage then Jason Downs opens with a tale about his pal who gets good deals on the Web. He cites the time his buddy called and said he found a world cruise for $300; the name of the cruise line is "The Navy." Candy is next up and complains that guys don't trust her because she's a comic. Andy Haynes has an interesting slant on teeth: they're high maintenance and if they go bad you have them replaced with gold ones; imagine if the same rules applied to a broken arm! Then Joe Klocek shares that he once saw a homeless guy punch a pigeon out of the air. How much free time does a guy need to perfect that move? Finally, Drennan Davis sings a song, "What would you'd like to be when you grow up: doctor, cop... whore?" With the evening's comedy served up to the thankful audience, Bill Bellamy announces the three comics who will be moving on to the semi-finals. The lucky acts are Drennan Davis, whose reaction is "Yesss!" He is joined by Iliza Shlesinger, who immediately calls her mom and isn't exactly happy when her mom asks, "What does this mean?" Iliza whines, "Mom, you're kinda sucking the joy out of this!" Drennan and Iliza are joined in the semis by the famous Meehan Brothers, who decide to get arrested as a celebration. Bringing up the rear is Jeff Dye. He's a pro, don't forget! Onwards north to Canada! Last Comic Standing packs its winter woolies and heads north to the frozen city of Toronto. Waiting for their funny bones to thaw out in the 14-degree weather, the contestants are put through line aerobics by Fearne and Bill outside Yuk Yuk's International Comedy Club. The talent scouts are "News Radio's" Dave Foley and "Mad About You's" Richard Kind, whose senses are immediately barraged by Mike Embleton and his Rusty's Wonderous Workouts act. There seems to be an abundance of "creepy, keep fit" dudes in Canada. Must be the water. These acts prompt Richard and Dave to make comments like, "You mind if I stop you? Cos I really want to," "Get out!" and "Dreams, just crush 'em!" Among the goodies are Winston Spear (who dances to his own tune), Bill Lazanik, Kate Davis, Dave Martin and Sean Cullen. Next up to try out is Pete Zedlacher, who lost 45 pounds and has gone from obese to overweight, but you know he could be chubby if he worked hard. Then comes the Williamson Playboys, the oldest living father and son Cajun music duo, who perform their song about a cat in a microwave. They are a big hit from the first note. Following their blazing trail are Darrin Rose, Scott Faulconbridge, Sabrina Jalees. Next up are Derek Forgie as Sully the Showman, who manages to turn a "no" into a "yes" with improv that has Richard giggling. As always, the talent scouts have words of wisdom for the camera. This week Richard and Dave say they admire the comics for doing stand up since it's the hardest job in showbiz. First up in the evening showcase is Sean Cullen. He talks about British gangster movies, much to the crowd's delight. Moving on, Sabrina Jalees talks about her Pakistani dad screwing up English when he gets mad -- he says things like "Don't think you're going to be pulling these shenanigans without being severely peniscized!" Darrin Rose talks about gerbil burgers, and Winston Spear tells us he has a tattoo on the bottom of his foot that says "think fast." Finally, the Williamson Playboys appear. All that can be said about this act is: check out the highlight clip on NBC.com this week! "I've never felt so unprepared," Derek Forgie admits to Fearne before opening the evening showcase. But his high energy proves to be a hit. Brian Lazarik talks about looking at a glass vase in a store when he was told, "You break it, you buy it." So Brian broke the owner's finger and said, "Now you belong to me." All this earns him a special Fearne Cotton post-show hug. Nice. Chuck Byrn is old school; in fact, he's married to an older woman and has a lot to get off his chest before eventually being replaced by Kate Davis. Moving on, Dave Martin isn't the hit that he had hoped. Pete Zedlacher talks about iconic animals defining nations like the USA, who has the eagle: a nice big mean bird. Canada has the Canada goose. Watch out! The flying "V" is coming over you every six months and we're pooping on your golf courses! With the evening drawing to a close, the results from Toronto are in and counted. The comics gather on the stage as Bill Bellamy tells us who will be getting a ticket to a warmer place called the semi-finals. The first spot goes to Winston Spear, who promises to be the last comic dancing. The second spot goes to a happy and relieved Sean Cullen. Find out who will be joining him as The Last Comic Standing bandwagon rolls on to Minneapolis, Nashville and Miami! |
