Coloured Hair Fakes
Q: i found this picture on ebay ages ago and have been wondering ever since if it was a real hornby flower fairy, or a copy. i don't have any other details on it, i'm sorry. i just thought she was pretty at the time, and it eventually sold for a reasonable amount i seem to remember. do you recognise her?
A: Real doll, real wings ...fake everything else. This dress belongs to a pink haired doll that looks almost like a Hornby doll(the body is almost identical), but it has rounded ears instead of pointy ears, and the face shape/details are slighty different.
The coloured hair dolls are a mystery to everyone. The doll bodies themselves are almost the same, and the wings are close too. The petal part of the dresses however are not quite the same fabric or quality (the indentations are not so clear), and there is no 'Hornby' stamp in the back of their heads.
So, there are 2 main theories:
1) Hornby sold the moulds on to another company after they stopped making Flower Fairies, and the other company(not a famous one, hence no makers mark), had to change a few details(ears, hair, face), to ensure they didn't breach Hornby's copyright for the Flower Fairies range.
2) They're very rare Hornby prototypes, that never ended up being made for sale. ...
very unlikely though, because I'm sure they'd put 'Hornby' on them anyway  ...and I've seen a LOT sold on ebay, so I think there are too many out there to be a prototype line.
Sorry I couldn't give a definate answer, but I hope that info helps.
Best wishes,
Larah/x
