Oirana
“What are you doing here? Why can’t I get out of bed?” she said then her eyes widened as she heard not a word of it. She looked up at Healer Hanian in question and he frowned, her brow creasing as if in pain as he looked up towards the door. Oirana turned to look at the door and saw her mother walk in. She smiled at her mother and put out her arms. “Mother! I feel as if I haven’t seen you in forever, come give me a hug!” Again she did not hear it though she was certain she’d said it aloud. Her mother’s eyes widened and her face was suffused with joy as she rushed over to hug Oirana. Her mother’s mouth moved quickly but not a word came out and Oirana shook her head. “Stop mother, I can’t hear you, what are you saying?” That time she almost swore she heard something, but it could have been just her own thoughts. It didn’t bother her that she couldn’t hear herself though. What bothered her was that her mother kept talking and she couldn’t hear it. She frowned and turned to look at Hanian for help but the man had his back to her, bending over the table in her room. When he straightened he handed her a piece of paper with writing on it and she frowned up at him a moment before bending her head to read:
Her head came up quickly and she looked at Hanian in shock. “Accident? What accident?” And she shook her head, as she still could not hear what had just left her lips. But Hanian seemed to hear her and he took the paper from her adding a few words then handing it back to her. She frowned at it as she read:
“No! I don’t remember it. What sort of accident? What happened?” Oirana began violently shaking her head, convinced that perhaps she’d gotten something in her ears and perhaps she could shake it out. She caught her breath in her throat though as she read what Hanian had written next:
“Sorry? You’re sorry?” cried Oirana and she saw her mother wince at the anger she knew must be in her voice. “But what am I supposed to do if I can’t HEAR?” Hanian just shook his head and handed her a glass of wine. She drank eagerly, hoping the wine would settle her nerves and only after she’d finished the glass and was beginning to feel very sleepy did she realize that he’d spiked it with fellis to make her sleep. She glared at him even as her eyes drifted shut and she fell into a deep sleep. Continue... |
