Episode 3: CRASH! Red and White and Suspicious All Over!
Lina and Gourry looked at each other. "I don't buy it," Lina decides. Gourry nods in reply. "I know I must seem very suspicious to you," the voice says, and Lina and Gourry turn toward the door. "But for now, I have no intention of harming you. I merely wish to perform a business transaction."

Lina sweatdropped. "And what's that supposed to mean?" she asks. After some debate of how trustworthy the man is, the tan-cloaked man outside the door reminds Lina that she has a "formidable bodyguard" inside. At this, Gourry looks confused, until he realizes who it is. After more debate, it's decided that he can be let in. Lina stands well away from the door, and asks Gourry to let the man in.

Entering the room, the man's odd hair and skin shine menacingly. Behind him, steps the mummy man that had caused them so much trouble before. "Well, well," Lina begins, "Are you friends with the Mummy Man here?"

"Mum.. MUMMY MAN?" the man asks, enraged. He's about to charge at Lina, but the tan-cloaked man puts his arm in front of the "mummy man", asking him to halt. He explains that the mummy man's name was Zolf, and that Zolf is his "responsible servant". Lina smiles. "I'll just raise the price," she decides.

The tan-cloacked man says that she's very shrewd, and decides to get down to business. He says that he can't tell Lina what the item he wants is, for if he did, she might, out of curiosity, raise the price, or instantly decide not to sell it. So, he wants to see the items first, and have her name the prices, and then he'll tell her which one.

Lina comments that he seems not to be one of the bandits. He was different from those stupid thieves.

The man explains that to find the "item", he had dispatched many of his men to search for it. In a flashback, he is seen sending out his servants. After a while, Zolf had finally infiltrated a bandit gang, and had stumbled across the very item everyone was searching for. However, just as h was ready to take the item out of there...

Lina interrupts by sticking her head up right in front of the flashback. "I showed up and took it, right?" Lina asks, looking very happy and pointing to herself. "As you say..." The man said, closing the eye that was showing out of his cloak.

"Stealing from thieves... that's pretty low..." Lina commented. "Look who's talking," the man pointed out nonchalantly. Lina suddenly let out a happy squeal. "Uh, well, now I understand the circumstances," she replied.

She shows the man to the treasure, pointing out the Orihalcon statue, the cursed knife, and the rare coins. It's decided that the gems can be left out. "Well, then, let's start with the enchanted knife," Lina declares, flashing back to when the crazed shopkeeper had almost killed them. "Okay... Let's see... The price for it is twelve..." - The tan-cloaked man stood straight, gazing on in the same bored cool way he always did - "million!" At this, the man completely lost his uncaring composure, and his eyes nearly bulged from his head. Gourry and Zolf both gasped with shock and wide eyes, as well.

"What's with that reaction?!" Lina asks, bringing her fists up close together, and smiling happily. "You guys are all the same! Making promises you can't keep! It's only 100 times the street value!" As she talks, all anyone can do is continue to gape. "Come on! Come on! Come on! Quit gaping and pay up!" Lina demands, striking a pose.

The tan-cloaked man sweatdrops very visibly, still with that one eye showing wide open. He was only expecting her to charge one or two times the street price. He sighs, turning his head down.

"Now, for this thing," Lina says, pointing to the Orihalcon statue, "I'll charge you... Thirty million!" she says happily, holding up three fingers. Zolf and Gourry are falling over, and Gourry then opens his mouth wide with shock. Meanwhile, the tan-cloacked man is busy stamping his foot in the background. "For that price you can buy a castle from a prince!" he yells. "On prime real estate, fully furnished, with the servants included!"

Lina laughs, and gazes dreamily, imagining herself in a beautiful white dress, looking from a beautiful castle. Going back to real life, she laughs sheepishly. She admits that the price IS ridiculous, and decides to cut it in half.

"Just half? Are you insane?" the tan-cloaked man asks. "You little brat!" Zolf yells, clenching his fists. "Make fools of us, will you?"

"What?" Lina challenges. "A third-rate wizard who can't tell the difference between a light spell and a fireball can't call me a brat!" A short flashback is shown from when Zolf fled from the restaurant at Lina's false fireball.

Zolf realizes what had happened, and is furious. They start to argue more, but the tan-cloaked man tells Zolf to stop. "What about $100,000 up front, with the rest later?" he asks, trying to bargain. When Lina refuses, the man says that he has one last idea: Lina could join them. In 6 months, he could give two, or even three, times her asking price.

At this, Gourry and Zolf fell back on each other with wide eyes. "90 million?" Gourry gasped. However, Lina merely crossed her arms, and smiled. "I see you want it badly," she stated. "It must have on hell of a hidden value." Lina says that she wouldn't feel comfortable hanging out with "their type". Although she doesn't have logic to guide her, she has "women's intuition". And, this intuition tells her that... They're the type she'd sooner die than join up with. There was a moment of dramatic silence, and Gourry and Zolf sweatdropped at the effect.

The matter settled, it was obvious that the "business transaction" was over. The tan-cloaked man went along with what he'd said. He would retreat quietly for that day. However, the next morning, the moment they set foot outside the inn, he would become their deadly enemy.

"Let's go, Zolf," Zelgadis ordered, to Zolf's protest. "Oh yes," the man stopped. "My name is Zelgadis." "I'll remember that," Lina said. At that point, she closed the door.

A lantern swung back and forth on the ceiling. "They're gone," Lina stated simply. "Why'd you set those ridiculous prices?" Gourry asked, dumbfounded. Lina explained that if she'd played along and simply sold it, Gourry would obviously not have any respect for her. Gourry agreed that he probably wouldn't have liked that decision as much. Then, he asked if they would come back and attack when they weren't expecting it. "I know his type," Lina responded confidently. "If he said he'll wait 'til morning, he'll wait." "Is that your 'women's intuition'?" Gourry asked. "Perhaps," Lina responded, starting to take off her shoe while sitting on her bed. Suddenly, she stopped and looked up, then slid her boot back on, and looked straight at Gourry in one fluent motion. Gourry blinked, confused. "Okay, okay, okay," Lina said hastily. "I'm gonna hit the sack now. Go back to your room." She pushed him out the door. "See ya! Good night!" she finished, and winked. Then, she closed the door.

Gourry, shut out, started walking down the hall slowly. "I don't understand girls at all," he muttered.

The next day was a beautiful one, and everything sparkled. Gourry and Lina were already starting their journey again, walking along a path.  Gourry reminded Lina that they were supposed to be enemies to Zelgadis and Zolf now. "Yeah, I guess so," Lina responded. "If you think while you're walking, you'll trip," Gourry commented. "Leave me alone," Lina responded. As they managed to hitch a ride on a haywagon, Lina pondered what it was that Zelgadis and Zolf were after.
She told Gourry that she had been debating it a lot. Lina deduced that, excluding the coins, the knife and statue were the only things left. She still didn't know for sure which one it is. The one that Zelgadis wanted, however, definitely had to have a spell on it, if he wanted it so badly. Casting a spell on the two objects, she obtained some magical properties. The knife had a cheap spell on it to make it sharper, and it could also be used as a beacon. Meanwhile, the Orihalcon statue' was sealing in some kind of magical power she couldn't reach. The statue, she knew, could also be used as a beacon. Starting to explain how the beacon could guide your spirit backwards through the Astral Plane, Lina abruptly stopped when she noticed Gourry's behavior - snoring. Getting very angry, she jumped up and shook him. "Don't fall asleep when I'm being serious!" She screamed. Explaining briefly what she was talking about, Gourry asked afterwards why an object that can only be used as a beacon could be worth so much. Lina sighed and replied, "That's the question."

The haywagon finally arrived at its destination, a forest. Lina knew that since the bad guys were willing to pay so much, there must be some sort of secret involved. "Which is...?" Gourry prompted. "If I knew, it wouldn't be a secret!" exclaimed Lina, smiling. She then added that she knew another secret, though. The enemies were probably waiting to ambush them, since the perfect place would be right here. "That's the kind of secret I wish you'd keep to yourself," Gourry muttered, rolling his eyes.

Continuing on their way, weird creatures are seen behind the trees everywhere, their eyes glinting. Lina and Gourry remain calm. "So, they thought they could surprise us with a bunch of berserkers?" Lina asks, calmly.

Out of the blue, the berserkers roar, and attack, jumping down from the sky, and from all angles. A raging battle ensues. Lina attacks with her sword, defeating several. Gourry's swinging his sword left and right, and defeating dozens of berserkers easily. Meanwhile, Lina cast a fireball, making many more berserkers fly out of the forest in the explosion. The bodies rained down like hail. Going out after the creatures herself, she punched one of them out. After casting another spell, Lina looked behind her. She was just in time to see a berserker swing his sword down right at her.

The scene shifts, and Lina is lying on the ground, looking happy, and commenting on how warm the sun felt. Gourry is trying to catch his breath after killing so many berserkers, and he even hit one with the back of his fist when it was sneaking up on him even as he spoke. "Don't you feel a little bad, Lina?" Gourry asked. Lina had left Gourry to fight all of the berserkers alone. Lina says that he has a point there, but she said she wanted to rest a bit longer.

Gourry walked up to her, and said they should get going. Lina asked if they couldn't just stay; it was so nice and warm. "Would you cut it out?" he asked. When he grabbed her wrist, Lina suddenly grimaced in pain, and brought her hand close to her stomach. Right beneath her chest, a bloody wound can be seen.

Gourry was alarmed that Lina was hurt, and apologized for misjudging her, although Lina tried to explain that she was OK, and that she just needed time for her healing spell to take effect. Suddenly... Gourry simply picked Lina up. "What are you doing?" Lina asked. "I'm carrying you!" Gourry decided. Although Lina started kicking and screaming like a baby, not wanting to be seen in public like that, Gourry still carried her to the nearest inn. "Oh, be a good girl," he was saying.

The scene zooms in on an inn; it's nighttime, now. A light flickers off in a window. Outside, trolls are seen walking about for an instant. Lying in bed, Lina was still angry. She was saying how Gourry was a nice guy, but he was DENSE. Suddenly, she stopped her thoughts; she had heard footsteps outside the door.

The door burst open, and an old man stomped in, followed by a bunch of trolls. Seeing the empty bed, he demanded, "Where is she?!" "Right here!" Lina announced from atop the door, causing the old man to turn and look at her in alarm. She backflipped off of her sitting position, and landed outside the room, facing the old man and trolls inside. She immediately began to cast a fireball. Although the old man recognized the spell she was about to cast, there was no chance to get away. She fired the blast into the room, and slammed the door shut.

Gourry ran down the hallway, hearing the noise, and asked Lina what was wrong. Smoke was trailing out around the corners of the door. Lina explains that there had been more intruders. "Did you get them?" Gourry asked, looking at the door. "Dunno," Lina replied. She explained that a direct hit from one of her fireballs could melt iron, and probably killed the old man, but there were a bunch of trolls...

As if on cur, the door burst open, and a troll growled at them. Gourry swung his sword, taking it out. Swinging his sword at another troll, he was shocked when a charred old man, though just as fierce-looking as before, stood in his way, blocking with his own sword. "Not bad, old man," Gourry complimented him. "You shouldn't underestimate your elders," the man said. The sword clash sent the old man jumping backward. After Gourry took out another troll, both he and Lina were ready for the fight to get serious...

...then everything stopped. Red spots danced around, and both the trolls and the old man looked to be in a weird sleeping trance. Lina and Gourry gasped in alarm. Lina recognized it as a mind-control spell. "Did you do it?" Gourry asked. "No way," Lina responded. "It's an easy spell, but who could control so many at once?"
"Midnight visitors," a voice commented out of the darkness, as an eerie sound of arrival was heard, "can be a nuisance, can't they?" "Who are you?" Lina asked. It is seen that the man who had spoken wore a long red cloak, green at the top. The man had violet hair sticking out at the sides, and his eyes were closed as he was talking. He said that with fellows skulking around at night, he couldn't help but "stick his nose in".

"Kind of like you!" Gourry noticed, referring to Lina. "Oh, give it a rest!" Lina yelled at him. Lina assumed that the mysterious man that had arrived had put everyone else in the inn asleep too, since no one had checked out the commotion.

With a snap of his fingers, the mysterious visitor sent all of the intruders out of the inn; they were all controlled by the spell. Eerie organ music is heard, accompanied by an odd ringing of bells. "They were apparently sent by Zelgadis," the man guessed. When asked if he knew Zelgadis, the man responded "yes". Zelgadis was his enemy. "He is attempting to resurrect Shabranigdo, the Monster King," he announced, to Lina's alarm. A vision of Zelgadis is seen, evil among burning fire. His eye glowed a fiery red as well.

"Shabranigdo? The Dark Lord? Resurrect him?" Lina gasped, in disbelief. "Yes," responded the man. "Zelgadis is a mixture of human, demon, and golem. A creation of utter evil." The man knew that Zelgadis wanted to bring forth Shabranigdo, and destroy the world, although he didn't know for what purpose. He declared that Zelgadis was now Lina's enemy, as well as his. "I am but a humble priest, but I cannot overlook this evil ambition to revive the Dark Lord." The man further explained that Zelgadis was after the key to the Dark Lord's revival, which Lina possesses. Enemies would come searching for it for Zelgadis. "Why don't you give it to me?" The mysterious man offered.

But Lina protested. She insisted that she should keep the item, since, if the man got it, he would have to fight off Zelgadis and his minions all alone. However, the man was unalarmed. "I, Rezo, should be able to handle it," he declared.

"Rezo!" Lina exclaimed. "I thought it was you! One of the five wise men of the age! Rezo, the Red Priest!" Rezo turned away humbly. "Yes, that is a name they sometimes call me by." Lina gasped loudly with shock. "Is this guy famous?" Gourry asked, clueless. Lina's eyes narrowed with annoyance. "Any five-year-old knows who he is! I'll explain later." Gourry shrugs, and places his hand on his head, confused.

Even though he tried several times, Rezo couldn't get Lina to give the item to him. Lina was still too concerned for his danger. After pleading with him, Rezo agreed. "Very well," he complied. Casting a spell, he threw an orb into Lina's room. "From tomorrow on, I will support you from the shadows," Rezo declared.

"What'd he do?" Gourry asked, looking into the room. Lina looked in; everything in the room was perfectly normal. "Uh, this happens to be the room that I completely obliterated with a fireball." "So?" Gourry asked, not getting it. Lina sighed. "Never mind," she gave up. "I'm going to bed."

Oddly enough, she headed to Gourry's room. She decided that it was too dangerous to stay in her room that night. She decided to sleep on the floor, and let Gourry take the bed. However, Gourry surprised her by lying down beside the opposite end of the bed. "How I can sleep on the bed, when there's a woman lying on the floor?" he asked. So, it ended up that no one slept on the bed.

Lina thought about what Rezo had done in the past. He was a healer, and traveled the land helping others, and performing miracles. A sort of flashback is seen of Rezo helping a little boy. Then, a shadowy picture of him against light is depicted. "However, there's two things different about him from the other wise men," Lina thought. "First, he's been blind since birth. And another thing... his name sounds like it should be for a villain." The shadowy picture of Rezo keeled over to one side at this remark; it was probably annoyed.

The "flashback" ended, Lina had another vision. That of fiery black chaotic energy rising up, and towering over all of the other monsters in the world - Ruby-Eye Shabranigdo. "If I accept what Rezo the Red Priest told me about him," Lina thought, "then who is this Zelgadis, really?"
