Episode 4: DASH! Run for it! My Magic Doesn't Work?! |
Sunlight shines in a friendly way outside the inn, while inside, Lina and Gourry are busy eating breakfast. "Gourry! You really don't know anything about Shabranigdo?" Lina asked in disbelief. Gourry shrugged. "None. Not a thing." Lina keeled over to one side; she couldn't believe Gourry knew nothing about the Dark Lord. The Legend of Shabranigdo was so famous... she thought that everyone knew about it, not just wizards and priests. While Lina sighed over Gourry's ignorance, Gourry was happily eating his meal, oblivious to what Lina was thinking. Lina decides that she'll tell Gourry the legend from the beginning. "You think you can listen to me while I tell an old story?" she asked. Gourry agreed, and so Lina began the tale of the legend. Lina was skeptical. She doubted that Gourry would even understand the story, no matter how she told it. When Gourry told her to go on, she began. "According to the legend, long, long ago, the world we live on was thrust onto a great staff. The world exists on top of it, smooth and round, like..." Lina searched for an example, "like this egg on the end of my fork," she decided, holding it up. Visions of the past, and the legend, appear. Electricity crackled everywhere. "Around the edge of the world," Lina continued. "two groups waged an ancient battle." The vision flashed a brilliant yellow, and smoke swirled everywhere. When it cleared, huge creatures were seen. "One was the race of Monsters, the other, the race of Gods. Leading them, were Shabranigdo, the Dark Lord, and Ceiphied, the Dragon God." Two huge dragon-like creatures shot colossal blasts of energy at each other, their eyes glowing with determination. "The war raged for hundreds, for thousands of years. Finally, Ceiphied was able to break Shabranigdo into seven pieces, and then he sealed them somewhere on our world." "So Ceiphied beat him?" Gourry asked, chewing. "No, only imprisoned him," Lina replied. Gourry responded that he thought Shabranigdo had been split into seven pieces. Lina explained that it doesn't matter to a Monster. And, although Ceiphied imprisoned the seven pieces, it took all of his strength to do so. "Then, a thousand years ago, one of the seven pieces of Shabranigdo was reborn. One piece remaining of Ceiphied defeated him with the help of the Water Dragon King, and his body was sealed in the earth." Lina explains that the power of those two beings compete savagely, and that the balance of the world is broken as a result. That was the reason why monsters, trolls, and others of those creatures existed. "You understand?" Lina asked, expectantly. "Not at all!" Gourry announced. Lina fell over. She wasn't surprised. However, Gourry said that he DID understand that Shabranigdo was the main monster guy. Lina smiled. "That, for you, is a big accomplishment," she commented. Looking out the window, Lina was thinking about the full extent of Shabranigdo's power. Although she didn't know just how powerful he was, she knew that he'd be nothing but trouble. Out of nowhere, Gourry suddenly reaches over, and steals Lina's sausage with his fork. "That's my sausage!" Lina protested. Gourry explains that since she was staring off into space, he assumed that she didn't want it. To teach him a lesson, Lina reached over, and stole at least 6 of Gourry's sausages. at this, Gourry protested in return. Gourry reveals that he did understand that Zelgadis wanted to bring the seven pieces of Shabranigdo back to life. Lina said that Gourry was correct, but only if the "man claiming to be Rezo" was telling the truth. She explained that there was no real proof that he was the real Red Priest. Nobody had heard of any trace of the true Rezo for ten years. Gourry theorized that perhaps "Rezo" was a spy sent in by Zelgadis to trick them. "Although he might be a fake, he's not your run-of-the-mill magic user," Lina decided. And, to Gourry's relief, she told him that he was still trustworthy; she has a pretty good judge of character. At this, Gourry went over, and patted Lina's head. Lina sighed to herself, and supposed that he would never stop treating her like a kid. In a darkened room, likely far away, Zolf bent over a crystal ball, and chanted incantations. However, there was no result. Zelgadis came walking out of the shadows, and asked if there was any sign of the item. Zolf responded that he had no luck with it; the item couldn't be traced. "Try the crystal ball once more," Zelgadis decided. "Then we'll try bargaining with them one last time...." Meanwhile, Lina and Gourry were walking through a brightly lit forest path. Lina yawned, and commented on being bored, looking at the same trees all the time. Gourry responded that this was definitely the quickest route to Atlas City, so she'd just have to bear with it. Looking down at the ground, Lina muttered a "Hey, Gourry". Gourry turned around, wondering what was up. Lina revealed that she would have to stick pretty close to him for the next few days, since she wouldn't have her magical powers. She would need protection, especially during a fight. In disbelief, Gourry asked for a demonstration. When Lina muttered "Source of all power," and snapped, Gourry looked all around, but nothing had happened. Lina explained that she probably wouldn't be able to cast anything more powerful than a light spell for the next two or three days. Gourry crossed his arms knowingly. "That time of the month, huh?" he asked. Lina looked up in alarm. "Hold it, Gourry!" "It's that time of the month when girls don't want to talk about it," Gourry continued. "When sorceresses and priestesses all start losing their powers." Gourry put his hand up to his chin in thought. Gourry was unexpectedly hit with a rock. Lina jumped up to him and lifted him up by the shirt. "How does a guy with the brains of a jellyfish know about 'that time of the month'?" she demanded. Gourry couldn't understand what she was getting so excited about. He explained that when he was a boy, a woman nearby telling fortunes would suddenly close down her shop every month. When he asked why, she would simply reply that it was "that time of the month". Turning to Lina, Gourry asked, "What, does 'that time of the month' mean something special?" Lina's eyes opened wide. "You mean you don't know??" Gourry decides to hold up on the conversation. Looking up Lina saw that not more than a few yards away, Zelgadis was standing coolly on a log. This time, he didn't bother wearing a hood. They eyed each other for a while, and then Lina whispered, "It's him." "So, you finally stopped playing around, and decided to show yourself, eh, Zegaldis?" Gourry asked loudly. "Uh, isn't his name Zelgadis?" Lina asked. "Is it?" Gourry asked. Zelgadis growled to himself. "My name is ZELGADIS!" he said. Getting down to business, he announced that if they didn't give up the item, he would take it from them by force. "I'd think carefully before I answer," a gruff voice nearby commented; it was a werewolf. He walked over to Zelgadis's side. Lina noticed that the wolf probably had some troll blood in him. The werewolf asked Zelgadis if all he had to do was get the Orihalcon statue. "Dilgear!" Zelgadis yelled. Dilgear covered his mouth; he wasn't supposed to reveal the item. Then, he decided it didn't matter, since Lina and Gourry were both going to die. Lina replied that if he got on her bad side, she'd have no mercy on him. "I'll take you both down myself!" she declared. Zelgadis and Dilgear glared down at her. "Go, get'm Gourry!" she ordered, putting out her hand. Everyone fell over except for Lina. "Me go get'm?" Gourry asked. "Have you no shame?" "Hold it, you two!" another voice shouted. "Nothing to worry about! I'm here, now!" It was revealed that the old man trying to kill them from last night had returned. Lina protested that three against two wasn't fair, but the old man didn't miss a beat. He admitted that he didn't know what Lina had done to him the previous night, but that today was going to be different. Lina thought to herself nervously of what to do. "Are you ready?" Zelgadis asked. "Flare.... Arrow!" The beam of light shot at Lina and Gourry, and they jumped apart. The battle had begun. Both Rodimus (the old man) and Dilgear lunged and Gourry. Rodimus flung his ax at Gourry, but missed. Meanwhile, Lina was busy running from Zelgadis. Drawing her sword, she tried to bring it up to match Zelgadis's. However, it was obvious that Zelgadis was better in swordsmanship. She decided that she'd need Gourry to help later. Zelgadis, while she wasn't concentrating, brought his knee up into Lina's stomach. Lina yelled, did a few rolls on the ground backward, and slammed into a tree. She coughed, bending down over herself. "You're supposed to be nice to girls," she protested, coughing. Zelgadis insisted that if she had just given up the statue, that wouldn't have had to happen. "So, in the end, this is all you are," he stated, lifting up Lina's chin, and looking at her closed eyes. "Now, hand over the statue!" he demanded. Lina began chanting an incantation. When Zelgadis opened wide his eyes, and looked closely to see what she was doing, she yelled "LIGHTING!" Blinded, Zelgadis was stalled back in the trees. Lina ran out of the wooded area, knowing that he wouldn't fall for another light trick after that. Meanwhile, Gourry was still dueling Dilgear and Rodimus, though he was tired. Rodimus commented that Gourry was pretty good, holding both of them off. "Gee, thanks a lot," Gourry said, grinning sheepishly. "Look, we just want the girl," Dilgear reminded him. "Stay out of our way, and you won't get hurt." Gourry glared back at him. Dilgear continued talking. "Right now, our leader is probably..." he made a tearing sound, and moved his finger across his throat. "Lina..." Gourry whispered. At this point, Lina was sprinting through tall grass, the blades billowing like waves around her. As she ran, she wondered if she would lose him. However, she discovered that she had ran into a completely open area by a lake once she got out of the grass. Turning around, she saw Zelgadis standing behind her in the tall grass, with the same cool stony glance, as always. Lina decided that she might as well try a spell. "Flare... Arrow!" she yelled, and shot a bunch of arrows athim. Just as the energy was about to hit him, they wobbled strangely, and fell to the ground. "That's all?" Zelgadis asked, unmoved. Lina decided to make a run for it. Zelgadis suddenly raised his hand above his head, and a green flash was emitted. Throwing his sword down, he used a "Shadow Snap", and caught Lina's shadow, making her not able to move. However, using a Lighting spell, Lina broke free of the spell, since she removed her shadow. At this point, Zelgadis stepped forward. "Try a Mono Volt," he said. Powerful electricity crackled from his hand as he placed it on Lina's shoulder. Lina screamed a couple of times, and then passed out. Zelgadis sighed. The job was finished. Gathering an orb in his hand, Zelgadis shot it skywards. When the light reached the sky, it emitted a blinding flash. Zelgadis looked on, coolly. When Zolf and Rodimus saw the light, they knew that the job was done. Lina still lay on the ground, unmoving. It looked like it was all over.... |
