Hades' castle

Xena finally gets to hail Charon himself. Through his help, she can be dropped on Hades' doorstep. But the danger is not over yet! Hades lives in a rough neighbourhood, and Xena must beware the Well of Condemned Souls!

Sketch: To enter the castle, use your new buddy Charon's boat services. After getting past two stone Golems, you must continue by choosing the right path of rock patches; some are dangerous, some aren't. After that part, entering Hades' chamber must be made safe by putting out six green torch flames. This will suck all dead souls and Wraiths into the Well of Condemned Souls so that they can't stop you when you enter Hades' chamber, the exit of this level.

Walkthrough: Proceed till you reach a sign. See the creepy-looking boatman ahead? That's Charon. (More about Charon can be found here). You've won his favour by passing his traps. A chime bell is hanging next to his boat. Hit it once with the Chakram. Charon will steer his boat towards you. Once he's close enough, hop in, and wait until he reaches the other shore. All passengers may now go off board! Smack three dead people lurking ahead. Before running further, get a health power-up along the left wall of the castle. Also, there's a prize by the right wall. You'll have to jump over to a patch of land there and claim a Hand of Zeus and a health power-up. Now you can enter the castle. On the right hand side, in a vase-shaped corner on the right lie two health power-ups. After getting these and exiting this corner, pass through some fire-spitting gargoyle heads. )Pass one gargoyle head just after it spits fire.) Two ferocious stone Golems are waiting for you at the other end. Unless you're a very good fighter, I suggest you avoid these monsters and just go further. Since you don't have a lava pit at your disposal here (like you did with the other Golem in Road to Hades) these guys are tougher. If you want them dead anyway, read the Golem tips in the Road to Hades walkthrough. Or use the two Hands of Zeus you will acquire in this level.

Don't forget an item though; while you are running past the Golems, you'll see you can jump up into an opening along the left stone wall. Do this as you'll be safe from the Golems here. Don't try to finish them off nicely from up here, as the Chakram doesn't harm them. Instead, go through another passageway up here till you see lava in front of you, as well as a stalactite hanging from the ceiling. Remember these from Dyzan's Lair? Hit the stalactite with your Chakram. You can now hop over to a secret area, slide down a short ramp and claim another Hand of Zeus and a health power-up on a rock patch. Retrace your steps to the Golems. You might want to try your luck against them, using your two Hands of Zeus. Or just run ahead till you reach a green stairway, offering two health power-ups on the stone hand railing. Once you've run down the steps, the Golems won't follow you anymore. Whew! Grab scroll#1. Stand on the pressure pad ahead. It will show you the safe ones of many rock patches ahead. Together, they form a path. Memorise their locations and jump over them carefully. If you get on a wrong rock, you'll get an electric shock which will almost kill you. Also, the safe path changes; you'll have to stand on the pressure pad again to reveal the new safe way.

Once you're on the other side, prepare to do some careful work. I'll call the slightly big piece of rock you're standing on now, the "base". You'll have to return to it a few times. First, jump over several rock patches and get a health power-up perched on a strip of land, curved around a left corner. Return to your base. Now comes the "fun". You'll notice that the rock patches ahead form a path which curves to the right, leading to another area. In this area lies the Well of Condemned Souls. The dead souls, known as Wraiths, are lurking around the well. When Xena stand at the curve of the "rock path", she'll be in view of the Wraiths. As long as she is, the Wraiths will move toward her slowly. Don't let them near you, because one single touch of a Wraith results in instant death (even if your health bar is completely full or if you're cheating).

Around the well are six green flaming torches. By hitting them with the Chakram, the flame will get doused. Once all flames are gone, all Wraiths (and other weird, dead creatures) will get sucked into the well and the coast will be clear for you. Here's the tactic; stand at the curve of the rock path (at the curve and not further). Quickly fire the Chakram at any of the torches. Immediately return to the base. When you're not in sight of the Wraiths, they'll float back to their places. After a while, return to the curve of the path and do the same trick. Keep repeating the above, and the flames should be out after a while. Be careful not to hit a torch you've already put out, or it will re-light again. You'll be wasting more time when trying to douse it for the second time. When all flames are out, you can safely proceed. Pick up scroll#2. Jump over to near the well, go up the flight of steps. Grab the Sword Upgrade in front of the chamber door. Approach this door to exit the level.

(Xena slowly walks through the long chamber, until she sees Hades, the god of the Underworld, sitting on his throne.)

Hades: "Hello again, Xena. To what do I owe this...pleasure?"

Xena: "Hades, I need your help! Kalabrax has great powers that will be used for evil unless you can send me to the surface world."

Hades: "Hmm... Her magic continues to grow. The gods don't need her kind of competition. As a favour, I'll send you to the village of T'ir Na. There you'll find the Lyre of Orpheus. Use it as the key to her undoing.

(Hades uses his magic and Xena is manoeuvred back to the surface world).
