The last three years have involved a very fast learning curve as I have studied Studio Stitch/Textiles, and attended many practical workshops on various techniques.
Just over two years ago I did not know how to use a sewing machine, and now most of my work is machine embroidery in various forms. I am constantly learning new ways to use free machining to create structures and surfaces. It can be a quite hypnotic process.
My work is very detailed. I like to combine hand and machine stitch with all sorts of threads, yarns, fabric scraps and beads. The ground fabric is often layered, painted or dyed.
Much of my inspiration is based on my fascination with history, particularly medieval history. Historical textiles, ceramics and jewellery are a rich source of creative ideas.
