A bit of anime rambling, scroll down to the first blue link if you want to read the fanfic right away.

In March of the year 1999, Yuu Yuu Hakusho or as it is popularly known around here as Ghostfighter began its second run on Philippine television broadcast. It became a hit among young viewers despite that it was not a prime time show. Its schedule on GMA however was a prime time slot: Weekdays at 7 PM. I believe this shrewd planning is the direct cause of why there is a such fervor for anime in the Philippines right now.

Yuu Yuu Hakusho aka Ghostfighter is not the first anime to be shown in the Philippines. That is hardly the case. Other animes have made noticeable marks first; especially, Voltes V which used to be shown on IBC. Dragon Ball was also shown regularly on RPN 9 as well as Saint Tail by the same broadcaster. Sailormoon is also shown by ABC. There also abound many series, which I refer to as morning anime. Anime versions of Cinderella and the Little Mermaid come to mind. In early afternoons, there was the Jungle Book and Kimba to watch. However, it was GMA who began actively promoting anime by broadcasting Yuu Yuu Hakusho/ Ghostfigter every weekday at 7 in the evening.

YYH/Ghostfigher didn't become a hit immediately. Believe me, I know from personal experience. I started to watch the series from the first episode, and I can still remember my brothers teasing me about still watching cartoons at my age. I also remember some of my friends giving me blank and disbelieving looks when they found out I keep track of the series. Things changed however though I was not here to witness it. In April, I left the country for about a month to take a study tour in Taiwan. It was anime and manga heaven over there. 15 kilograms of manga (Japanese comics not the fruit okay?) was heavy, but it was worth lugging it through three airports. When I got home, I was stumped when my brothers went for the YYH manga. It was then I found out that "Ghostfigher" was in.

It has been about a year now, and the current anime situation in Philippine television is... very different than it was before. GMA, who has taken an unofficial stand as the top anime channel in the Philippines, currently has more than five popular anime series. Most of which are shown from around 5 to 8 pm. The still famous YYH is still broadcasted, and Flame of Recca just recently ran its course of 42 episodes. Lupin the Third is shown twice a week (TTh) while Dragon Ball, three times (MWF). Each weekday has a different anime to show in the order of Mon-Fri: Hell Teacher Nube, Ranma 1/2, Master of Mosquiton, Monster Rancher and Vision of Escaflowne. Friday evening includes Pokemon and Fushigi Yuugi.

Click on the banner above if you want to see exactly what I mean. :)

Channel ABS-CBN is also showing anime at earlier time slots in weekday afternoons. It has already ran Neon Genesis Evangelion and Samurai X as well as other series such as The Slayers. It is showing Wedding Peach and Street Fighter 2 right now with the anime Tenchi Muyo having been recently replaced by another series called Super Doll Lica. I'm trying to find out what it is called in Japanese. Oh... and GMA has also ran Gundam. That's nearly all the animes considered right now as the most popular. Only Card Captor Sakura remains to be broadcasted by the local television network. Of course, foreign channels provided by cable, most notably AXN and Wowow, contribute to the anime mania around here as well.~ Yen (May 2000)
