TeluguLipi Editor Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is TeluguLipi Editor?
Telugulipi is an Editor Created to allow the users to typeset in Telugu with ease. It uses TeluguLipi, a custom font created for Telugu.

How does it work?
You just type your telugu documents in English and the Editor will transliterate the telugu text written in English and show it in Telugu.

How do I write in Telugu?
Using this Editor, you can type Telugu documents in English (Phonetically) and then it will show up in Telugu. Writing Telugu in English like this is called Transliteration. There may be various transliteration schemes in use today but RIT scheme is most popular for Telugu. So, TeluguLipi Editor supports RIT transliteration.
If you don't want to worry about these schemes, just type Telugu in English, and 90% of the time it will come up right.
Ex. If you write "priyamaina ammaku, naannagaariki namaskarinci Sreenivaas vraayunadi..." it will show up as " , §Í ѧ é¬ ..."
You have to remember that English has only 26 characters where as we have lot more. For example to write & in English, you have only one character "d" right? So, in order to differentiate & , you shoud write 'Da' and 'da' respectively. It will be the same case for & or & .
Another example: If you want to write "" you would write it as "kalamu" right? But if you want "¨" you can write it as kaalamu or kAlamu or ka'lamu. Just remember uppercase lowercase typing matters when you are typing Telugu in English.
Some of the special Characters:
- Ru
- RU
- nama@h
- kRu
- kRU
- ~ma
- ~na
- ~ra
- ksha or xa
For more information on each character please read "RIT Documentation".

How can I get ma pollu ()?
For example if you want šœ type suprabhaatam' (Note the single character at the end) instead of suprabhaatam. For all the other characters to force the pollu you can use caret (^) after the character in question (Ex. To get ¬ѧ © write bhaaskar^raavu). You don't have to do that if that character is the last character of the word ex: é¬

How to force ' ' in a complex character?
If you are trying to write type an&vayamu instead of anvayamu. When you use ampersand symbol (&) following 'm' or 'n', & are generated instead of sunna.

Can I combine Telugu and English in the same document?
Yes. In order to tell the editor not to convert a piece of text enclose that text between two pound signs.
Ex. To write " school ʞ", type "maaku ee rOju #school# laedu"

How do I publish my web site in Telugu
It's very easy to do using TeluguLipi Editor. Please read this for details.

Can I send e-mails in Telugu?
Yes. Export the document as HTML file and then send it your friends as an attachement file in e-mail. This is the best way to do it today. If you paste the Telugu text directly in the mail body and send it, some of the character will be lost or converted by the mail programs. So the end result is not what you want. So send as HTML attachement. As long as the recipients have TeluguLipi fonts installed on their machines, they will be able to read your attachement just by double clicking it. If they don't have TeluguLipi Fonts installed on their machine they need to download them from our site.
If you have your e-mail setup properly, you can select 'Send' menu item directly from the TeluguLipi Editor. Using this feature you can send e-mails directly from TeluguLipi Editor itself. Once again, when asked, choose HTML option.

Can I send faxes in Telugu?
Yes. If you setup fax properly, you should be able to print to your FAX Printer Driver. That means, when you choose menu item "Print" under FIle menu, in the list of printers, you can select the FAX driver as the your printer and then click ok. Then the Fax software should automatically come up and ask you for the necessary information. If printing from TeluguLipi Editor gives you any trouble, copy the Telugu Text from the Editor and paste it into MS Word or any other word processor and then Print it.

How to handle large documents?
If you are working with large documents, TeluguLipi Editor will be slow to use because it tries to convert every key stroke you make. You can tell the Editor not to convert unless asked, by select the menu item "Auto Convert" under under "Convert" menu. By default it is checked, if you click once, it will be unchecked. When Auto Convert is off, you have to click on Convert button to see your text in Telugu. To turn the Auto Convert back on just select the Auto Select menu item again.
Best thing to do is, to type your document in TeluguLipi Editor with Auto Convert off and when you are done typing Click on convert button, check for mistakes, correct them and then save the text you typed. Then for formatting select the Telugu text and paste it in to a word processor like MS Word and save that as a separate document. This way, you have the original text you typed in English, and also have the Telugu version of the same document with proper formatting. Until we make the TeluguLipi a full pledged word processor, we have to live with this.

How do I format size, color, bold etc?
You can format the Telugu text before you print it. You can align, bold, italic, font size, color, etc formatting functions. All you have to do is select the text you want to reformat and then select one of the options in the format menu. Remember you can format the Telugu text only. Format the text in TeluguLipi Editor only after you finish typing, because every time you convert the text, you will loose formatting. So first turn of the 'Auto Convert' feature under "convert" menu and then format the telugu text. Or use MS Word or similarproducts to format your text. To do that Select menu item "Open in Word Processor" under format menu.
What fonts are supported?
At this point we support TeluguLipi and abTelugu are the only fonts we supports. In the near future we will support 'Tikkana', Shree940 and more.
