DECORATING YOUR HOME WITH COLOURS More and more friends are now acquiring their own properties and doing redecorating or renovation. Identifying suitable colours can change the energy, feel or mood of your home. Red is the great energizer. It is a lucky colour in feng shui, but be careful not to overdo it or it becomes overpowering. Red is linked with power, passion, energy and challenge. It will help to keep it alert but it can be tiring. Use it for rooms with lots of activity. A few red pillows and a red throw can help promote passion in the bedroom. But if the whole bedroom is painted red, it may led to arguments and probably physical fights. Orange promotes joy and brings confidence and sociability. It is light reflective and considerably increase both the light and our perception of warmth in a room. It is a good choice for entrance halls and rooms where people gather to socialize. The use of inviting, welcoming orange in an entrance hall immediately gives out the message that the occupants of the house are warm, friendly, sociable people who care about their environment and their friends. Use it in rooms for entertaining. Again, it is a powerful colour, which needs handling with care. It stimulates the appetite so avoid it if you are on a diet! Yellow lifts the spirits and raises your energy levels. But it is strongly affected by the colours used alongside with it. With black, it is at its most luminous; with violet it looks hard; with orange it appears purer and with green it radiate life and energy. It works brilliantly in many rooms of the house, bringing joyful energy to kitchens, living rooms, hallways and bathrooms. Use yellow in large kitchen where meals are prepared and served- you will be guranteed a lively atmosphere and good conversation at meal times. It’s also ideal for home studies and workrooms as it stimulates the left side of the brain, which governs logic. But babies have been known to cry more often in yellow painted rooms. Green is the great balancer. The colour of nature, it is soothing and calming. Green is considered a very lucky colour in feng shui. It is reassuring and harmonious- use it if you need to soothe the energy of your home. It is particularly useful for troubled teenagers. Bright green reminds us of spring and fertility but it is also the colour of mildew, poison and jealousy. Dark green is an eloquent colour and brings to mind the deep quiet of a pine forest. If the effect becomes cold as green is a cool colour, balance it by using warm contrasts such as browns and oranges. Blue promotes relaxations and peace. It’s supremely restful but also promotes good communication. In some shades blue is balancing, calming and rejuvenating, a colour with the power to replace excitement with tranquility- perfect to come home to after a draining day at work. Use soft blue in bedrooms to ensure a good night’s rest. It serves as a good colour for outdoors, providing a resting place for the eyes in bright sunshine. The shade beneath blue parasols looks the coolest and most inviting of all. It’s also a good colour in your home office if you need to communicate a lot of your work – it also gives a perception of a lower temperature which helps in concentration and stimulates ideas. But blue is also the coldest colour in the landscape and the one of distance. Blue absorbs light and will make a room appear considerably darker than it would if painted with a light reflecting colour such as yellow. Therefore if used indoors, a shot of balancing orange or golden yellow is useful to warm it up. Blue suppresses appetite (as very few blue food exist in nature), therefore may not be ideal for a kitchen or dining hall (unless you are on diet all the time). Purple is a colour of contradiction. It has strong assocications with royalty and mourning. Purple is linked to creativity and is favoured by artists, musicans and those who tend towards an eccentric, bohemian lifestyle. The colour ranges between blue and red, with blue-violet at one end and maroon at the other. Violet is the darkest and deepest colour of the spectrum. The more red a purple contains, the warmer and more comforting it becomes. Deep purples are too heavy for large areas but are tremedous for adding depth, richness and colour accents to a room. Pale lilacs, lavenders and violets have the opposite effect and are excellent for walls and ceilings. Used in harmonious colour schemes, their effect is cool but comfortable, making them ideal for bedrooms and healing spaces. The colours above are only indication. I do not recommend that you use strong colours on walls as long term exposure to a strong colour may bring about certain negative effects due to “overdosing”. If you paint your walls in bright yellow, it may provide an added jest or burst of energy for you to get through the day. However prolonged exposure to bright yellow may bring about anxiety which results in arguments. Therefore if yellow is your favourite colour, you may want to consider using a softer (pastel) hue of yellow which will bring about breezy and springlike mood. If you paint of office with soft tones of lilac or lavender, it may work well for your bedroom and help with your insomnia but if the same colour is used at your office, it may bring about unproductivity or lack of energy. Sounds hard to believe? For those staying in your existing homes but who are not having any major redecorating plans, you may want to introduce colours in splashes. This can be done in putting certain coloured objects in prominent places of your room or by a simple flower arrangement plan. The effect or “feel” of your room by using objects if it is too troublesome to repaint your rooms. For instance you can use bright sunflower arrangements in the room that you wish to bring out a cheerful sunny feeling. Or buy pieces of furniture that brings out the colour that you want. |
