Gold and Silver are a lot
like Red, Blue and Yellow, but there are distinct
differences.
- The
Weakness/Defense chart is a little
different.
- There are many new
attacks.
- The clock function
establishes a real-time simulation.
- Weaknesses and
defenses can be doubled or halved.
- There are three
new ways of evolving Pokémon.
- There are new
status effects.
As you can see, these are
big differences in comparison to the other three games.
Don't worry if it seems overwhelming; it isn't. I'm just
going to tell you a little about each thing.

NEW ATTACKS
There are many new attacks in Gold and Silver, you can look
at them on New
GS Attacks.
NEW LEARNING SPEEDS
Different Pokémon learn different attacks at certain
levels, but in Gold and Silver, a lesser-evolved
Pokémon may learn attacks completely different to its
elder counterpart. One example of this is Sunkern and
Sunflora.
THE CLOCK
At the beginning of the game, you are asked to set a clock.
The clock will keep the time all through the game. THE ONLY
WAY I'VE FOUND TO RESET THE CLOCK IS TO START THE GAME OVER!
You must also talk to the character's mother when you want
to toggle with Daylight Savings Time. The time of day will
affect which Pokémon you encounter. A clock set
within an hour's accuracy of your current time is A-OK.
WEAKNESSES AND DEFENSES 2X OR 1/2
Oddly enough, both types matter in Gold and Silver. For
example, a Graveler and a Squirtle are fighting, and
Squirtle uses a Water Gun attack. Since Squirtle and Water
Gun are both Water-based objects, the attack is amplified by
1.5. Since Graveler is both Rock and Ground types, and both
types are weak against water, the Water Gun will hurt it
double damage for each weak type, in this case making the
attack 4 times as powerful. If you multiply the damage and
amplification, you get a Water Gun 6 times as powerful than
if it was equipped on, say, a Meowth (Normal type) battling
a Mareep(Electric type).
NEW METHODS OF
EVOLUTION
There are three new ways to evolve your Pokémon. See
The
Evolution Enigma for
details.
NEW STATUS EFFECTS:
There are a few new status effects I know
of.
- CURSED: If
a Ghost-type casts CURSE, it similar to poisoning, but it
hurts more. Cure it by switching
Pokémon.
- SPIKED:
Spikes are positioned around the Pokémon, and when
it is recalled, the new Pokémon that appears will
be damaged by the spikes. This condition stays until the
end of the fight.
- POKÉRUS:
This is an irritating status condition. It latches onto
its victim and stays there for a few days, much like the
human flu. Aside from being annoying, it doesn't do much
else, but rumor has it that while infected, a
Pokémon's stats will double. To cure it, you must
have the infected Pokémon in your party, and do
not switch Pokémon during this time, or the virus
will spread. After about three days, the virus will
dissipate, and a small dot will appear on the
Pokémon's status screen, indicating that the
Pokémon has contracted the disease and built up a
resistance.
