This is an update, it is now pretty much sure that William Stinnett was the true father of Edney. Even though he married her mother, Harriett Yearout one year after her birth. I have a copy of the marraige license for this couple, dated 17-May-1849, one year after the birth of my Great Grandmother, who was born 05-Mar-1848. I have tried to unwind this legacy left to me, Edna also lists father of several of her children as William Stinnett. I have spoken with a professional genealogist concerning Edney naming the father of several of her children as her own father, the conclusion is that according to the laws of Tennessee in the late 1800's, if a woman became pregnant out of wedlock and would not or could not name the father, the only thing that could keep her from serving time was for her own natural father to step forth and take responsibility for her child. Her own natural father, this points me to the fact that edney was indeed the child of William Stinnett. William Stinnett is listed as father (actually guardian) of my grandfather, meaning that I may never uncover his true direct paternal line. Thus far I have located the names of the fathers of 3 of her 7 children. It could be perhaps that his natural father was a James or William Stinnett as listed in the City Directory of Knoxville, TN, maybe a cousin, or that he had no true natural father, not one to speak of, only a grandfather as a father figure. In the marraige certificate, William's name is spelled Stinnet, they were married in Blount County, Tennessee. The spelling is also on most occasions Stinett, but I feel that we can't place a lot on spelling in those days as most poeple thought it more important to feed the family then to learn to read and write. I am more inclined to think that perhaps the father of my Grandpa was her cousin, William Stinnett, son of her aunt, Martha Yearout and her husband Samuel Stinnett. Whatever the case may be, I can find no listing for a marriage of Edna Yearout, nor any record of who her father definitly was. I do know that during this period of time people did what they had to do. I often wonder about my GGreat Granny, Harriett Yearout. Several mysteries here I would love to clear up. There was 2 Harriett Yearouts in the family of John and Martha Raulston Yearout, 1850, Blount County, neither of which was my Harriett. We find her listed with her new husband, William. Harritte (spelling correct) Stinnett lists as 21, her husband William as 22. Where was Edna during this time? Now this leads to even more mystery, we do find Edna in the 1860 census of Blount County, living with the now aged Grandparents John and Martha Yearout. Edney lists as 12. If anyone has any info at all on this family, I would deeply appreciate your input. You will be given full credit for your input, as well as an e address link if you want. I was told by a cousin that William was also known as "Billy" and that he went to another state where he served a prison term, returning without Harriett. This same cousin remembers Samuel and Martha Yearout Stinnett as Aunt and Uncle, Samuel being brother to William, Martha sister to Harriett. I later uncovered the fact that this so called prison term was simply him listed as an inmate at the Poorhouse. It is a fact due to census information that William Stinnett had siblings, and that his father was John Stinnett. Siblings were definitly, Samuel D, Temperance E., Rebecca and possibly Thomas Church According to the ages listed in the Blount County, Tennessee census of 1850, William listed as 22, Harriett was 21. This would put their birth years at 1828 and 1829. According to the census report of 1880, William's date of birth was February 1829. He was born in Tennessee, mother listed as being born in NC. It would greatly interest me to find the names of the children of William and Harriett. I know there were siblings for Edna, but have yet located any names. . New information Wiliam Stinnett was lisred in enumeration district 18, Blount County, TN as Wilburn Stinnett, born February 1829, a Tennessee Widower. Father born TN, mother NC. Listed as an inmate at the Blount County Poorhouse. Info sent by Francis Gill a wonderful lookup who can locate hard to find records prior to 1900 New Information William & Harriett were missing in the Blount County, Tennessee census of 1870. I had been searching for them during this time period for quite a while. Their daughter Edney actually served time in 1870 for bearing an illigitimate child. William came to her rescue by taking guardianship of her last four children. I knew that if had been around in 1870 that Edney would not have served time. This census info was sent to me by Jackie Ginn, who has been a great help to me. 1870 Critterdon County, Kentucky, page 9, Union Precinct Yearout, J.J. farmer $600. $570. born TN Joanna 36, born TN Jacob 18, works on farm, born TN C.E. female born TN M.S. 13, born TN N. 9, male, born TN M.J. 5, born TN Joseph, 2, born KY W.R.
