This page contains Zebra pictures, Zebra facts, and other Zebra information.  The Zebra, scientific name Equus Burchelli, is essentially an African Horse.  Notice the Equus in the scientific name.

Grevy's zebra: Narrow vertical stripes on body but none on belly Stripes curve up on the haunches.

Plains zebra: Broad vertical stripes on body extending round belly, horizontal on haunches.

THE ZEBRA AND ITS STRIPES

Experts argue over why the zebra has a striped coat. Once widely considered to act as camouflage, this is now generally thought not to be the case. It is thought more likely that it acts as a bright signal to others in the herd, and may also help foals to identity their mothers.

Mountain Zebra: sleeker coat, with narrow stripes and a white belly. It has a fold of skin, or dewlap, under its neck. This is not found on the other two species.
