State Legislatures

The following Browns, descendants and relatives were elected to colonial and state legislatures.

E. Lakin Brown was born in 1809. He was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives from Kalamazoo County in 1841. He was elected to the State Senate and served 1855-1855 and again from the 21st District, 1879-1880. He was the great grandfather of US Congressman Garry Eldridge Brown.

Edmund H. Brown of Concord, NH, was elected from the 11th District to the New Hampshire State Senate and served 1895-1896.

Edward A. Brown of Danbury, Ct., was elected from the 11th District to the Connecticut State Senate in 1876.

Edward G. Brown of Bowling Green, Ky. was elected from the 21st District to the Kentucky State House of Representatives and served 1964-1975.

Elam Brown of Contra Costa County, Ca., was elected to the California State Assemby from the San Jose District and served 1849-1851 and from the 5th Districe, 1851-1852.

Elon R. Brown of Watertown, NY was elected as a Republican from the 35th District to the New York State Senate 1898-1904 and 1913-1918. He also served as a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1894 from the 35th District. He was a delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1904 and 1916.

Frank P. Brown of Whitefield, Coos County, NH was elected as a Republican from the 1st District to the New Hampshire State Senate, 1899-1900. He served as a delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1900 and 1924.

George Brown Jr. of Jefferson County, NY, was elected as a member of the New York State Assembly and served 1818-1819.

Gerard C. Brown of York County, Pa. was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate and served 1887-1894.

H. D. Brown of Freeborn County, Mn. was elected from the 5th District to the Minnesota State Senate in 1872.

H. M. C. Brown of Nevada County, Ca., was elected from the 16th District as a member of the California State Assembly and served 1855-1856.

Henry K. Brown was elected from the 21st District to the California State Assembly and served 1880-1881.

Henry R. Brown of Montgomery County, Pa. was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate, serving 1887-1890.

Hershel Brown of Liberty, Ky. was elected as a Republican to the Kentucky State House of Representatives and served 1970-1971.

Isaac E. Brown was elected from the 23rd District to the California State Assembly and served 1869-1971.

J. Marshall Brown was born 1924. He was elected as a Democrat to the Louisiana State House of Representatives and served 1952-1960. He served as a member of the Democratic Party National Committee from Louisiana.

 James N. (Jim) Brown was born 9 Defd 1926 in Mason, Mi. He served in the US Marine Corps during World War II. He was a delegate from Michigan to the Republican Party National Convention in 1968. He was elected as a Republican from the 6th District to the Michigan State House of Representatives and served 1969-1972. He lost a bid as a candidate in the Republican primary for the US Congress in 1972.

John Brown of Mansfield, Tolland County, Ct. was elected from the 21st District to the Connecticut State Senate in 1858.

John Henry Brown was born 29 Oct 1820 in Pike County, Mo., a son of Henry S. Brown and Margaret Jones. He was apprenticed to a printing office at age 12 spent most of his teenage working for newspapers in Pike County and St. Louis, Mo. He moved to Texas in 1837 and in 1839, moved to Austin where he worked for the Texas Sentinel paper. He was a private in a Texas Army unit during an engagement with Indians in 1840. He later moved to Galvestion and became associate editor of the Citizen and Galveston Gazette. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from Galveston in 1854. After his term in the legislature, he was elected Mayor of Galveston in 1856. He was elected to a second term but resigned when he was again elected to the State Legislature. He moved to Belton in 1858. He became editor of the Belton Democrat until 1861, when he became a delegate to the State Convention where he served as chairman of the committee that prepared the articles of secession when Texas seceded from the union -- according to the treaty between the Republic of Texas and the US, Texas reserved this right but it was ignored by the yankees during and after the War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and served on the staff of General H. E. McCulloch as assistant adjutant general. His poor health (which had forced him to move from Galveston in 1858), forced him to resign in 1863 and he returned home.

After the war, he joined a large number of Southerners who migrated to Mexico. The family settled in Tuxpan River valley, where he surveyed areas for settlement as an assistant Commissioner of Immigration for the Mexican government of Emperor Maximilian. In 1869, he visited Texas and the east on behalf of the Mexican government. He next year he made a lecture tour of northern states on for the Evangelical Church in Mexico. He stayed briefly in New Orleans and then moved to Dallas in 1871. In 1872, He was again elected to the State Legislature. In 1875, he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention. In 1880-81 he served as the revising editor of the Encyclopedia of the New West. John was also appointed state commissioner for surveying, marking and locating school lands in 1881. He was elected an Alderman of Dallas in 1884 and elected as Mayor soon after, serving from 1885 to 1889. From 1888 to 1890 he also was a justice of the peace. He kept busy as a writer and historian, publishing two historical books History of Dallas County, 1837-1887 (1887) and Life and Times of Henry Smith (1887). These were followed by his two most ambitious works, Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas (ca. 1896) and The History of Texas from 1685 to 1892 (1892), both considered standards today.

John married Marion F. ("Mary") Mitchell who was also an author; they had five children, including a daughter Marion who became an artist and illustrated books by both her father and mother. John died 31 May 1895 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Dallas. His personal papers are preserved in the Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas, Austin.

John E. Brown was elected as a Democrat from the 3rd District to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1974.

John H. Brown of Westmoreland County, Pa. was elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania State Senate and served from 1893-1900. He was a Republican Presidential Elector for Pennsylvania in 1904.

Lowell Huntington Brown was born 10 Jul 1885 in Cincinnati, Oh. He served in the US Army during World War I. He later settled in Riverdale, Bronx, NY. He was a candidate for the US Congress in 1940. He was elected from the 28th District to the New York State Senate and served 1945-1946.

Lucius Brown of New London, Ct., was elected from the 8th District to the Connecticut State Senate and served 1872 and again 1877-1878.

Manson H. Brown of Plymouth, NH was elected from the 4th District to the New Hampshire State Senate and served 1885-1886.

Perry Roscoe Brown of Mayfield, Ky. was elected as a Democrat from the 3rd District to the Kentucky State House of Representatives, serving 1932-1933.

R. S. Brown of Northampton County, Pa. was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate and served 1868-1870.

Randolph A. Brown of Louisville, Ky. was elected as a Democrat from the 41st Districe to the Kentucky State House of Representatives.

Raymond O. Brown of Sandy Hook, Ky. was elected as a Democrat from the 99th District to the Kentucky State House of Representatives and served 1974-1983.

Robert Brown from Murray County, Ga. was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1838. He died in Dec 1838 at the state capitol in Milledgeville, Ga. while serving in a session of the General Assembly. He was buried there in Memory Hill Cemetery.

Robert Brown was elected as a member from the 4th District to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1946.

Robert S. Brown was born 6 Apr 1828 in Brooke, WV, a son of Joseph Brown and Rachel Hood. He elected as a Republican from the 5th District to the West Virginia State Senate and served 1879-1881. He was a Republican Elector for West Virginia in 1864 and 1888. He was an alternate delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1868.

Mrs. Shirley Brown was born in 1952 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She was elected as a Democrat from the 69th District to the Florida State House of Representatives in 1993.

T. P. R. Brown of Randolph County, WV was elected as a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates in 1897.

Thomas A. Brown of Wirt County, WV, was elected from the 3rd District to the West Virginia State Senate in 1903. He served as United States District Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia 1921-1926.

Thomas D. Brown of Rowan County, NC, was elected as a Democrat from the 25th District to the North Carolina State Senate in 1913.

Thomas H. Brown of Troy, NY, was elected as a Representative from Rensselaer County to the New York State Assembly and served 1949-1959.

Thomas H. Brown was born 29 Jul 1917 in Indiana. He served in the military during World War II. He was elected as a Democrat from the 37th District to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1971.

Thomas S. R. Brown of Monmouth, NJ was elected to the New Jersey State Senate from Monmouth County and served 1891-1892.

Wallace Brown of Bardstown, Ky. was elected as a Democrat from the 34th District to the Kentucky State House of Representatives and served 1934-1937.

Walter Clifford Brown was born 28 Sep 1890 in Willimantic, Ct., a son of Clifford H. Brown and Josephine-Emily Patnode. He was elected as a Republican to the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1921. He was elected from the 28th District to the State Senate and served 1929-1931. He was married to Ethel Durkee and Jessie Griggs Durkee. He died 25 Jun 1936 and was buried at Warrenville, Ct.

Warren Brown of Contra Costa County, Ca. was elected from the 8th District to the California State Assembly and served 1855-1856.

Warren Brown of Hampton Falls, NH was born 11 Aug 1836, a son of John Brown and Sarah Leavitt. He was elected as a Republican from the 1st District to the New Hampshire State Senate and served 1872-1874. He was a delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1884.

William Brown served as a member of the Michigan Territorial Council 1828-1831 before Michigan became a state.

William Brown of Hampton, Ct. was elected from the 13th District to the Connecticut State Senate in 1857.

William Brown of Waterbury, New Haven County, Ct., was elected from the 5th District to the Connecticut State Senate in 1870 and again from 1880 in office in 1881.

William F. Brown of Ocean County, NJ was elected from Ocean County to the New Jersey State Senate and served 1857-1862.

William H. Brown was elected from the 1st District to the New York State Senate and served 1850-1851.
