VAX Help

The ACAD1 Server offers several on-line help guides and tutorials. They are located using the HELP and EXPLAIN commands.

HELP
EXPLAIN
The EXPLAIN command, used at the main $ prompt, is used to obtain information about various computer topics. Some of this information is locally written, dealing with various aspects of UACN and the features of the academic computer systems. The EXPLAIN command can also access the standard VAX HELP files to enhance this locally-written documentation. break bar

Accessing ACAD1 User News

ACAD1 User News is the servers messaging program. Here is where you will find recent technical updates, problem awareness messages, and any other relevant news about ACAD1. Occasionally there are also mass messages to all UAS students, staff and faculty. break bar

Accessing SE Alaska Conferencing with Portacom

PortaCOM is the ACAD1 servers local newsgroup (intRAnet-communications) program. Here you will find discussion groups about subjects ranging from music critiques to on-line class conferences. In order to use the PortaCOM system you must have an ACAD1 computer account, be able to get to the dollar ($) prompt, and have a basic understanding of prompts.

A short menu of commands appear before the hyphen prompt. The menu changes for different situations. The first command on the menu does not need to be typed.

Getting Help

Conference

Different news groups are called Conferences in PortaCOM. PortaCOM conferences can be public (anyone can join, read and post to the conference) or private (you must ask the conference organizer to allow you to join). A computer conference entry is available to all members of the conference. Before you can read any messages you must become a member of the conference.

Accessing Usenet International News Groups with VMS News

VMS NEWS is the program ACAD1 uses to access the International Usenet News system. This is a bulletin board system that enables users to read items posted to the board, post replies to existing items, and create new items. Unlike person-to-person mail, all items posted into NEWS are intended for general view. NEWS sites are typically linked into the global USENET news network. If this is the case, the items will be read by users on many other systems throughout the world. At last count there were over 6000 newsgroups of various and eclectic topics. ACAD1 carries about 260. If you find a newsgroup that you wish to have included on the ACAD1 VMS, post the request to jxops on the acad1 server.

*A word of advice: Before you decide to jump right in and post to a newsgroup, spend some time (several days) "lurking" or reading the posts. This gives you an idea of the "mood" of the group. break bar

Accessing Real Time Text Conferencing with Phone

Phone is the ACAD1 version of a "conference chat" program. With Phone you can "call" anyone who is currently connected to the ACAD1 server. A split screen dialogue box appears and you can "converse" in real time. What you type they instantly see and vice versa (with occasional lag time depending on many factors). You can even "conference call". I've had as many as seven in the conference at once, but that many splits in your screen makes for difficult readability and it can get "loud" and unreadable when everyone starts talking at once. break bar
