Everyone wants to know how to access the Internet. There are several ways to access the Internet, the most common being through a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as PTI or the University of Alaska Network (UACN). As a student you are given one semester free access to the UACN.
One method is to connect with a local service provider (such as PTI or Seaknet)or distant provider (such as AOL) and sign onto their Network. Your provider will give you instructions on how to set up your individual computer to connect with their network. Or you can hire one of the local Computer Service stores technical department to set-up your computer for you.
The second method is to connect with your standard communications software and sign onto the UACN (University of Alaska Computer Network). We attempt to give you comprehensive instructions on how to connect to the UACN. You can attempt to set-up your own computers communication software using the provided appropriate instructions (ask us for this in your Needs Assessment). Or again, you can hire one of the local Computer Service stores technicians to set-up your computer for you.
UACN has several main computers for the different campuses. The Sitka campus uses the Juneau ACAD1 computer and offers students a free connection via local phone numbers from all over the state of Alaska, or a limited usage Tymnet 800 number.
In order to access the ACAD1 computer you must first enter through the Kerberos computer. This computer is the Universities "Firewall" or the first protective computer - a layer of security for our students. From Kerberos you may connect to the Internet in two ways. The first is to enter the secured ACAD1 computer. Once signed onto ACAD1 you have text-based access to the WWW using the Lynx Browser as well as many other basic services such as email, newsgroups, telnet, etc. The second is to directly connect to the unsecure PPP connection. This allows you access to the WWW using a graphical browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and to use the many "relay" programs available such as the ICQ pager.
