PATHS IN LIFE
by Jerre Divelbiss
I chose the white man’s ways as my path in life
When I walked Mother Earth’s trails, I did not feel
When I looked at Father Sky, I did not see
When I witnessed nature, I did not believe
When the earth cried, I did not hear
I was not one with the center of the earth
I was a stranger
I flew to the mountain top as on Eagle’s wings
I soared high in the heavens and there
There I saw my true path in life
The path of a warrior, a protector of the land
I surrendered my soul to Mother Earth
Now when I walk Mother Earth’s trails, I feel her every breath
I look at Father Sky and I see the bluest of blues
I marvel at the wonders of nature, the trees, the rivers
I hear all earth’s cries and I heed their warnings
I am no longer a stranger
I am at one with the center of the earth
I now have inner peace deep within my soul
I am home

MY COUNTRY
by Jerre Divelbiss
This country is my country
It feels my weight
Gives me breath and voice
Sings to me
And welcomes me home
This country gave me life
It lives within me
I need it as it needs me
Here I must stay
My feet have walked this country
It knows me as I pass by
I can rest in it’s shade
Or wade in its waters of life
I inhale it’s freshness
It’s sunbeams warms my soul
It’s breezes cool my skin
I listen to its music
After I’m gone and put into the ground
I will crumble into dust
And this country will once again
Be part of me
