Michigan Survivors of the Iron Brigade in 1923

In 1923 the Iron Brigade Association, a group comprised of the veterans of that famed unit, published a comprehensive list of all known surviving brigade members. It may have been the last such list published. The booklet, broken down by regiment, gives the soldier's name, final rank and current residence. On the whole, the data seems to be remarkably accurate. The data below reflects only the 24th Michigan. Perhaps I will someday create pages for the Wisconsin and Indiana regiments.

It is quite interesting to note how many of the Michigan men decided to make a life for themselves out west. It is also worth pointing out that while the 24th Michigan Regimental Association did not give equal status to the 1865 recruits, the Iron Brigade Association seems to have treated them as full members of the brigade. This despite the fact that virtually all of the 1865 recruits joined the Regiment after it was separated from the Brigade and sent to Camp Butler.
