John Kingsley

John Kingsley was born in New York. Later his parents moved to Newark, Ohio, where his younger brothers were born. In 1853 the family moved to Michigan, first to Inkster, and then finally to Romulus.

John Kingsley enlisted in company D on August 12, 1862 at Nankin. Why he would choose to travel to Nankin is a mystery. A Recruiting for the 24th was held in Romulus the very next day. His younger brother, Samuel had already enlisted in company D. A third brother, Orrin would enlist on August 13. John was 23, and had been working as a farmer in Romulus, probably on the family farm. His company was mustered into service on August 13, 1862.

O. B. Curtis (p. 396) indicates that John was in "Hospital Detachment" for three months. The notes kept by Captain Speed indicate that John was sent to the division hospital on January 19, 1863.

Other than his stint in the hospital, however, not much is known about his wartime service.

John mustered out with the Regiment at Detroit, Michigan on June 30, 1865.
