Samuel Kingsley Jr. was born in Newark Ohio about 1842. His family moved to Michigan in 1853, eventually settling in the small community of Romulus.
At the time of the Regiment's formation, Samuel Kingsley was a resident of Romulus. He enlisted on August 8, 1862 at Romulus. He was probably instrumental in securing the enlistments of his two older brothers, Orrin and John, who would join the company a few days later. Samuel was just 19 years old.
Samuel Kingsley was wounded in the foot during the first day's fight at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. Unable to escape, he was captured by the Confederates, but was left behind when Lee was forced retreat southward.
The exact nature of his wound is not known. It was probably severe, however, and it must have affected his ability to march. He was transferred to the Invalid Corps on December 28, 1863. He was finally discharged on July 17, 1865 at Jackson, Michigan from company C, 2nd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps.
Samuel attended the Dedication of the 24th Michigan's Monument at "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" , June 12th-14th, 1889.
For many years, Kingsley ran a store in the heart of "old"
Romulus. At the time the "Brown Books" were compiled
(c. 1905), he was a resident of Romulus.
