Journey Of Moments   7 of 8

Standing side by side, Sven and Jennifer insist upon paying for the birthday card Jennifer has in her hand at the cashier in the very card store in which they met.
The middle-aged cashier: No, no it's o.kay, you can take this one free.
Jennifer: No, it wouldn't be right; I'll pay for it.
Sven: It's not that much you know.
woman: Oh, I know, that's why I say you can take it.
Jennifer: If it means that much to you, I will, but I won't feel right.
woman: Oh no, I'll tell you what, I'll give it to you at special price.
Jennifer: Alright.
Sven: Good.
woman: That'll be $0.75 please.
Jennifer: Thank-you. (She passes her a dollar bill.)
woman: Oh thank-you. (She lets a quarter drop in Jennifer's hand.)
Sven: Bye. (He says to the woman, jumping his eyebrows as Jennifer and him walk past and out.)

Jennifer subsequently gives Sven a look of confusion regarding what just went on with the lady cashier. Only Sven understands her sudden generousity. At the entrance of the store, quickly, Sven is startled such that he takes Jennifer by the hand and swings her swiftly back into the store.
Jennifer: Now what, not another 'ex-girlfriend' I hope. (light-heartedly sly)
Sven: Oh no. It's just good-bye.
Jennifer: Good-bye?
Sven: It's my family, looking at his watch) They're probably looking for me. So I guess I have to go.
Jennifer: Right now, immediately?
Sven: Well they're coming this way, and I'd rather they not know--
Jennifer: I understand.
Sven: Yeah. So... (unsure as to what to say)
Jennifer: So it's good-bye forever? (Knowing the answer.)
Sven: Apparently. Yes.

The two stand silent for a brief, uneasy moment.

Sven: Thanks.
Jennifer: (looking up through her eyebrows) Yeah, I guess so, and thank-you for putting some life into my search for a card. (Smiling now)
Sven: Hmmm. I'm glad we're not playing a little game. We already know the words, so let's keep it to how it goes, here turn so that you're facing the back wall of the store.
Jennifer: (A little confused) Alright.
Sven: Now just keep facing that way--
Jennifer: And that's it?
Sven: No. We still have something to do...
