Lord of the Ring Characters

Here are the characters that I have for the Lord of the Rings. I am sure that it is far from complete, so if you want a character added email me at mipotter@vt.edu. The hyperlinks in the text will take you to a description of that race.

Anduril

The sword of Aragorn. Narsil reforged.

Aragorn(Elessar, Elfstone)

The direct heir, from father to son, of Isildur, Elendil's son. Therefore, the King that returns. The King of the Numenureans, or Westerneese. He leads "the Dead" in order to destroy the pirates of Umbar. He also heals Faramir, Eowyn, and Merry after the Battle of the Pelenor Fields. Raised in the house of Elrond. He marries Arwen, daughter of Elrond. (see Strider)

Arod

The horse of Rohan that Legolas rode, with Gimli at his back.

Arwen Undomiel (Evenstar)

The daughter of Elrond, the Half-Elf. She marries Aragorn, which decides her fate to stay in Middle-Earth and become mortal. She is named the Evenstar of her people, in the likeness of Luthien she was.

Hobbit. Recovered the One Ring from Gollum in The Hobbit. Plays a very minor role in LOTR. Passed the "Old Took" as the oldest hobbit in history. In the end sails west with the other ring bearers.

Baggins, Frodo

The hero of the story. He takes the One Ring to the Mountain of Fire and with the "help" of Gollum, destroys the ring. Enters the land of Mordor with only Sam and Smeagol, which is something quite unbelievable for hobbits. Sails west with Bilbo, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond.

Balin

A dwarf that is not in the book, but talked about. He enters the Mines of Moria between The Hobbit and LOTR. Is King there for a couple of years before Durin's bane and the orcs destroy the entire dwarvish company.

Evil spirits in the Barrow downs(tombs of men of Westerneese). They capture the four hobbits(Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin), after the hobbits leave the house of Tom Bombadil.

Black Captain

Captain of the Ringwraiths. Once a powerful Sorcerer and king of Angmar. (see Witch-Lord of Angmar)

Bolger, Fredegar (Fatty)

Friend of the four hobbits. Stayed behind, was put in the lock holes by the Chief.

Bombadil, Tom

By far one of the most talked about characters in Tolkien's works. He is a being of power, related to the Maiar, but whether is one or not, I don't know. He is master of the land. He helps the hobbits escape from Old Man Willow and the Barrow Wights. Wife's name is Goldberry. Also known as Iarwain Ben-adar by the Elves.

Boromir

Son of Denethor. A man of great size and valor, though not as learned as his brother Faramir. Came to Rivendell from Minas Tirith. Tries to take the Ring from Frodo, but repents before his death by orc arrows protecting Pippin and Merry.

Stout hobbit, who helped in the "Scouring of the Shire". Father of Rose Cotton.

Damrod

Ranger of Ithilien that watched Sam and Frodo during the battle upon the Road.

Deagol

Cousin of Smeagol in ages past. After Deagol found the Ring in the depths of the Anduin, Smeagol killed him. Though Deagol possesed the ring for a short time, he never wore it, so he was not a ring bearer.

Marshall of Rohan. Was routed by the orcs, but managed to gather men, and with Gandalf arrived at Helm's deep at the rising of the Sun.

Faramir

Son of Denethor. Captain of many men, great in body and mind. Very similar to Aragorn. Almost dies from a poisoned arrow of the Haradrim. Saved by Aragorn. Marries Eowyn and becomes Steward of Gondor and Prince of Ithilien.

Fatty Lumpkin

 Pony of Tom Bombadil.

Ferny, Bill

Evil man from Bree that sales the company the poor pony. Also at the gate upon the Brandywine Bridge, but runs away quickly. Causes much evil, but a true coward.

Gamgee, Hamfast (Ham, the Gaffer)

Father of Sam. Great character, quite funny. Talks with one of the Black Riders at the beginning of the story.

Gamgee, Samwise (Sam)

My favorite character. A true hero. He has doubts, but never strays from the path. A stout hobbit, though quite unused to adventures. Loves Elves. Marries Rose Cotton and has many children that carry on the tradition of caring for the Red Book. After Rose dies, travels west to Valinor.

Goldberry

Wife of Tom Bombadil. May have been a lesser Maia or a water or nature spirit of some sort. Very beautiful.

Gollum

A most retched creature, mainly because he possessed the One Ring for so long. At one time was an ancestor of present day hobbits, but now was a pitiful wretch. In the end he saved the world by stealing the Ring from Frodo and falling into the abyss of Mount Doom. (See Smeagol)
