Log Twenty-Eight

At the beginning of the session:

Quotes from the session
"I knew he had a crush on me, but I didn't think he'd try to bed me!" Hazard, lying her head off
"He tried that. Oh." Bronwyn

"I still think Julian's gay." Aneirin

"I throw bits of wood into the water for the sailors." Slaine

"Gerard is unconscious - the sailor who was bearing him up in the water tells you he's been hit by a piece of flying wood." GM
"Oh, well. I don't mention I threw anything, then." Slaine

"He who cannot agree with his enemies is controlled by them." Hazard
"Deep." Slaine
"Do I get the idea you're taking the piss?" Hazard

Slaine came back to Amber, and the king, to keep him out of the way, sent him out with Gerard and Brion on the newly commissioned flagship, The Aphrodite, which replaced the sunken Venus. They sailed off to open once more Shadow routes which Random had largely ignored.
Aneirin was also sent out to open up a shadow route, which he did with his normal tact and diplomacy. He stole a ship from Begma and sailed it back to Amber, laden with wool and mutton.
Even before Aneirin got back to Amber, the Begmans had complained officially to Amber. Aneirin was sent out in disgrace, with orders not only to set up the trade route as ordered, but to prevent the losses the Begmans had sustained from turning the war against them. He was unaware of Slaine's involvement in the Kashfan side of the war, and decided to go to Begma later, as he had plenty of time. Instead he went out and traded the wool and mutton, and got beaten up on by a pirate ship crewed entirely by tough females. Their leader, Gya, turned out to be a good trader, and Aneirin put her in charge of the trade routes. She invited herself up to the castle with him and made a pass at him. To avoid her - she scared him - he pointed out various people to him, including Julian and Benedict, who were arguing. During the course of that conversation, Gya let slip that Aneirin thought Julian was homosexual, Julian challenged him to a dual, and then needled him until Benedict joined the conversation on Aneirin's behalf. Julian then made a remark about William, and Benedict left in a foul mood. Gya being sent away, Julian and Aneirin talked blackmail for a while, including how to get Benedict's secrets out of him.
Bronwyn was terrified that she was pregnant - sickness, bad mood swings, that nauseous feeling - but when Hazard and Fiona checked her out all they could find was some mild poisoning. Bronnie reassured, Fiona set off for Shadow, muttering something about pawns.
Fiona arrived in Kharn's Shadow to check it out, and ended up in bed with him - this may or may not be because she is attracted to him. Watch this space.
Bronwyn suddenly declared the very next day - about three weeks after midwinter - to be her birthday. Then, not knowing the whole story about Hazard and Benedict, but knowing he loved Hazard, told him that he ought to be honest with her. She noted the next morning that he slipped out after her, and some time before lunch Hazard asked to see her and gave her a mild chewing out, but could hardly keep from laughing. Benedict disappeared from Amber, in reality just from the well-known passages. He hung around in the secret passages regretting what he had done.
Bronwyn, at the dance that evening in her honour, flirted with Bleys, and he took her to bed. Afterwards, while Bleys was still preening, Bronwyn heard the slight click of the secret door opening or closing. Nobody came in, but Bronwyn left Bleys and went to look for Benedict, the only person who ever used the passage.
She found him in Serena's mausoleum, and he revealed he was leaving Amber. She wanted to come but he dissuaded her, and they found a quiet room to say goodbye in the only way Bronwyn wanted...
Back on the flagship Aphrodite, the ship started taking on water for no apparent reason. Slaine was there at the lifeboats, helping Gerard and Brion, and he was one of the last to leave. Gerard was hit by a piece of wood that Slaine through, and Brion was separated from the lifeboats and had to swim. Slaine and the sailors were washed up on a shore to which Slaine had shifted, and then attacked by the natives of the place. Slaine saw them off with his ring and his vikings, and built a fortress there before he left for Amber.
In Amber, Brion had returned and Jessica was given the task of investigating the incident and finding out if the dreaded submarine had made a comeback. She made an utter hash of it, not least because some bastard implanted two months worth of false memories in her head, with the idea of getting her pissed off at Benedict.
Fiona persuaded Kharne to do something for her - borrow Julian's famous armour, while Fiona went ahead to Amber. So, they travelled through Arden, and Fiona persuaded Julian to look after Kharne for a while. Julian agreed and a few nights later Kharne stole Julian's body armour, leaving him with his greaves and helmet, and Trumped Fiona.
Jessica was trying to come to terms with her memories by stammering an apology to Benedict - caught up in the heat of the moment, she had called him a bastard - screamed is more like it. She came round flat on her back with his sword at her throat and his foot on her chest, and apologised hastily as soon as she realised what she had done.
