Log Twenty-six
At the beginning of the session, Benedict had made a huge but rather stupid self-sacrifice to get Julian back alive, and the cousinry were trying to find Hazard on the grounds that she was the only one good enough to break him out.
Quotes from the session
"We want sanctuary." Kharn
"Sure, sure. Just don't die outside normal working hours." Rinaldo
"You're working on a pig farm?" Jessica
"Well, compared to the family, pigs are squeaky-clean. And there's always the chance of coming up smelling of roses." Hazard
"Hazard is back, with a little boy, who looks just like his daddy, Aydrien." GM
"Oh hell. Benedict is not going to be happy. I don't say anything, but I'm thinking that." Jessica
Kharn and Slaine watched the ex-prisoners beating up their erstwhile captor Prince Benedict, but when Al appeared, they slipped out, not wanting to see him blinded. Valentine, the Soldier-Scholar followed them, and they made a plan for getting Benedict out of there. Together with Valentine, Kharn stopped Slaine from trying to rush back into the room with his personal bodyguard, and instead made plans to spring him from prison that very night. Kharn teleported them all out together, into the Amber infirmary where Josh was waiting, having been warned by Valentine, Benedict's spy. He repaired most of the damage, but Benedict's eyes were destroyed. Kharn and Slaine begged sanctuary, and Josh took them to the king, where Rinaldo used irony at them.
Aneirin had returned to Amber, stocked up on food, and hidden in the Pattern room, at the centre of the Pattern, after deciding that was where they could not get to him. He was found relatively quickly, but to walk the Pattern meant passing through a spot where the walker was vulnerable and Aneirin was not. He stayed there, Bronwyn and Jessica and Slaine and Kharne stayed watching him, and Josh stayed watching Bronwyn.
Benedict escaped into Shadow, taking Morrolan to look after him, and leaving the castle virtually defenceless. A few weeks after they left, Amber was attacked by Kharn's old friends and his army. With Hazard Trumped back, she and Morrolan held the steps up the side of Kolvir, while Josh, the suposedly peace-loving intern, held the town and saved Amber while Hazard called in the Irregular Guard. About half a million men had attacked, and the defenders were outnumbered. Didactylos the ninja had gone out to look for reinforcements, and was nowhere to be found.
Bronwyn was seeing to the last requests of any hunky wounded men when the first wave of climbers came over the walls to establish a beachhead within the castle itself. She repelled them, and sent off a man to find Hazard, who gave her a hand. At the presice point when an assassin sent to get the king came over the wall, Jessica chose to try to force her way into Hazard's mind to ask for help. Rather to her own surprise, Hazard was stabbed by the assassin's poisoned blade, and although she dropped him, she fell to the ground and for a while her very life was in danger as the Highly Irregulars who were not at the gates fought to keep her body. Even when they took her to the infirmary, she did not recover.
With the help of the DragonLords and the cossack members of the Irregulars, Josh held the gatehouse and got everyone into the castle, while Slaine and Kharne kept out of the way and did damage from afar, Kharne with magic and Slaine with his ring. Jessica was still out in the middle of the army, and Rinaldo sent the royal assassin out to find out what the huge explosion was when Jessica brought through a large chunk of Abyss power and fused reality. The assassin insulted Meredith, who teleported all his clothes away rather than deign to answer. When the Assassin had apologised, he was teleported out to the main army where he proceeded to try to find Jessica so he could kick her in the ribs while she was comatose. He failed, and Jessica was brought to the castle late that evening, tied to a magical construct and the ransom for her was the surrender of Amber, with the promise that the defenders could go free.
Josh, choosing his moment well, disappeared into a house, and after a while four demons came out - Mandor, Merlin, Dara, and an unknown. They challenged the army and champions were chosen - on one side, Morrolan, on the other, Duke Borel! This caused some stir, as Merlin knew he was dead, having killed him. Hazard also had claimed to have killed him, and Jessica knew that Benedict had. It was a draw, both being killed, but DragonLords have strange constitutions and Aliera healed him and had him put on a ventilator. He was up and arguing by the next day. Borel was definitely dead.
The king gave Aneirin personal prtection if he would fight in the battle, and Aneirin agreed, and helped the defenders. After a while, the king sent off Bronwyn to find an antidote for the poison that had taken Hazard down, as she was getting worse instead of better. Jessica, having escaped into the Abyss, decided to Trump Hazard and say sorry, and was nearly killed by her cousin, crazed with pain and fever and with the reflexes that years of tutelage by Benedict had given her. She decided to go out and look for an antidote without being told to, as Hazard's condition was her fault, and she felt guilty.
Having decided to help, Jessica took a trip to Valliard's Haven to see her nominal ward, Alastor, and ask if they had any ideas how to help. Alastor gave her a couple of hints on how to outwit Crowley, and Jess took a shortcut to the Abyss by the tunnel of fire, and tricked Crowley into giving her Dirithas, which has a part of Hazard's soul in it. After a sentence like that we should rest, but we press on apace... Crowley, hating to be outwitted by what was, essentially, one of Benedict's ploys, used sucessfully on the demon in Aurora, told her she could have Dirithas if she recovered it, and that it was in something called the Di'as machine.
Bronwyn, meantime, had wound up where Benedict was, to ask him if he had any idea about poisons. He dismissed her with less words than usual, as he was in a bad mood, and she tried to get Hazard through into a slow Shadow, but Hazard nearly killed her. Having failed to Trump Fiona, Bronwyn called Benedict, who saved her from the approaching enemy as she slipped into unconciousness. We leave her there.
