Welcome, the books presented in this section of the bookstore relate to the academic study of the Witchcraft Hunt in Early Modern Europe. They are not presented in any particular order. In most cases the edition listed is the paperback version, as these are cheaper and often easier to acquire. In each case the type of book presented is listed. Title: | Witches & Neighbors : The Social and Cultural Context of European Witchcraft |
Author: | Robin Briggs | |
Publisher: | Penguin USA
Year: | 1998 | |
Type: | Paperback | |
ISBN: | 0140144382 | |
24 hours | Comments: | Witches and Neighbors, a remarkable history of European witchcraft, explores the persecutions against its supposed practitioners in the late Renaissance era. Even at the time, writes Robin Briggs, many thought the inquisitions against witchcraft absurd; a chronicler of the time asked "whether the evidence be not frivolous, and whether the proofs brought against [alleged witches] be not incredible." Despite such objections, thousands died, mostly women, mostly poor. Examining contemporary accounts and court records--300 from the duchy of Lorraine alone--Briggs notes that the inquisition heightened divisions between the educated and the uneducated classes, "as their world views polarized to the point where vast areas of what had once been common belief were stigmatized as superstition." |

24 hours | Comments: | Legal and social historian Hoffer provides a different examination of the Salem witchcraft mania: one based on studies of panic rumors, child abuse and family relationships, providing a modern perspective and analysis of Salem events. Thus are internal and family tensions revealed in a different approach to analyzing the Salem events: an approach which includes reflections on the institution of slavery, Salem's role as a bastion of American culture and civility, and issues of increasing consumer interest and changing social morals. |

Publisher: | Cambridge Univ Press

Type: | Hardcover | |
ISBN: | 0521482585 | |
1-2 weeks | Comments: | This is the first english translation of Behringers most important book "Hexenverfolgung in Bayern", published in Germany 1987. In this part of Germany 900 witches were executed (and a many more tried for witchcraft) between 1560 and 1730. Behringer finds that most trials happend in years of particular dearth and famine. One of his conclusions is that every major persecution in this southeastern part of Germany was rooted in agrarian crisis. - His book should be read by anyone who only know about witchtrials in english speaking countries. There are almost 500 fascinating pages in his book. Comment by Rune Hagen. |
