A Soundex is made from a USA Federal Census of a particular state. For example, all similar sounding last names, from the state of Wisconsin, recorded during the census year 1900, are grouped together on microfilm. A Soundex is a valuable genealogy tool. Here is how.

Each name has a Soundex code based upon the sounds in the name. The Soundex code for the name “Birkholz” is B624. Surnames that sound the same but are spelled differently, like “Birkholz”, “Berkholz” and “Burkholz”, are all on the same Soundex.

Therefore, a Birkholz Soundex of Wisconsin from the year 1900 includes all “Birkholz”, “Birkholtz”, “Berkholz”, “Burkholz”, and people with similar surnames, who were living in Wisconsin during the 1900 census. This helps Americans in two ways: 1) You don’t have to order the census record for a particular county, and search it for hours while you hope your ancestor is recorded on it -- Then if they are not on it, order another county census and spend hours searching again. You just order the Soundex for the whole state. Then search through all the Birkholzes to find yours. The Soundex record will include information about the county the ancestor was living in, plus the birthplace, birthdate and family. Then you can order the census for that county if you wish and get additional information about that ancestor. 2) Those of you who receive junk mail know how a last name can be misspelled in a variety of ways. Things were similar for our ancestors. Their names were often misspelled. So if you’ve been looking for a “Birkholz” and can’t find them, it’s possible their name was somehow misspelled on some records. A Soundex goes more by how a name sounds, not just by how it is spelled. The names of many Birkholz families were misspelled to “Berkholz” or even “Barkholtz” on US documents. One example is the Friederich G. M. Birkholz family, which had children under three different surnames: Fischer, Birkholz and (after they came to America) Barkholz.

These Soundex notes can also be helpful to Germans who would like to find where relatives immigrated to, before 1900. For example, if they heard Granduncle August went to America, Soundex notes can help locate where in America he settled.

I copied these names to the best of my ability from Soundex records. Nevertheless I'm only human, so mistakes are possible. Some of the handwriting was illegible--In those cases I took my best guess and put a question mark after the illegible name. We add more Soundex Notes as we get more. I order a Soundex microfilm, then take notes, then post the notes to the BFHS pages, when I can.

Each list is in alphabetical order. Each head of a home is in bold text. Their family, if any, is listed below them. The county they were living in, plus their personal data, is included.

Census takers did not always spell names correctly. If you don't find the name you are looking for under one spelling, try looking under another spelling.

If you find your ancestor here, note what state and county they were living in during that census year. Then, for more information about them, you can order that census on microfilm.
