         Capital: Oviedo (asturian Uviéu).
         A region in northern Spain with its own language and 1,1
         million inhabitants. The Asturian language (called
         asturianu, not bable as some say in
         Spain): 90% can understand it, 72% can speak it, 57% can
         read it, and 38% can write it. Asturian has some oficial status since 1998, but
         no oficiality. Teaching of the language (not in the
         language) is guaranteed and some administrative uses are
         also regulated. The western corner of the region is
         Galician-speaking territory, though some Asturianists claim that is
         a vaeriety of Asturian proper, and not Galician. There are
         other language minorities in the Iberian peninsula that
         speak languages related to Asturian, see below.
