In the seventeenth century articles made of mother-of-pearl and various kinds of stones became very popular. They had been valued in Russia from old times, were carefully preserved, and were part of treasuries of grand princes and monastery vestries. The Kremlin Armoury collection possesses cups made of rock crystal, diferent types of jasper, and carnelian. The decorative qualities of these articles are determined by the materials themselves. Their natural beauty is emphasized in combination with skillfully executed silver and gold mountings.
