Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:50 (KJV)
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Eph 3:20-21 (NIV)
Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:50 (NASB)
Success Can sometimes dazzle you in the achieving, but there's usually someone around to
help you keep perspective. TV newsman Tom Brokaw has story about that:
Brokaw was wandering through Bloomingdale's in New York one day shortly after he was
promoted to co host on the "Today" show. That show was a pinnacle of sorts for
Brokaw after years of work, first in Omaha, for NBC in Los Angeles and Washington, and he
was feeling good about himself. He noticed a man watching him closely. The man kept
staring, Ed finally, when the man approached him, Brokaw was sure he was about to reap the
first fruits of being a New York television celebrity.
The man pointed his finger and said, "Tom Brokaw, right?"
"Right," said Brokaw.
"You used to do the morning news on KMTV in Omaha, right?"
"That's right," said Brokaw, getting set for the accolades to follow.
"I knew it the minute I spotted you," the fellow said. Then he pause added,
"Whatever happened to you?"
The humility of hypocrites is, of all pride, the greatest and most haughty.

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" Romans
12:21.
"I remark, then, that a man is overcome of evil 1. When illtreatment excites the
angry passions... 2. When he settles down into confirmed hatred of the offender... 3. When
he indulges designs of revenge. 4. When the illtreatment of one leads us to suspect the
friendship of others. 5. When abuse begets habitual sourness of temper. 6. When he
attempts unnecessarily a public vindication of his character." D.A. Clark. From The
Biblical illustrator, Romans, pages 550,551.
"Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary
bless..." 1 Peter 3:9 RSV. There are times when this seems impossible! It's the
"contrary" that interferes with our will. One dictionary gives the following
synonyms for contrary: "balky, cranky, disagreeable, irascible, mean, obstinate,
ornery, perverse, wayward." What a pity that we who profess to be like Christ must
instead confess to being just the opposite.
Peter here is more concerned with our responsibilities than our rights. There is a law of
accountability that presupposes obligations to our brothers and sisters, for we are not
islands unto ourselves. If someone has done what we consider wrongdoing, we do not have
the right to make their wrong our right to avenge, for only God can assess motivations. We
do have a responsibility to keep our own heart right in relation to that person. We should
be on our knees with words of love for the person instead of words of anger and gossip on
our tongues, making the situation much worse.
A story is told of a duke who wanted to war against one of his peaceful neighbors. The
troops rode into the town and found the children playing in the streets and the people at
their usual occupations. They pulled up their horses and asked one of the workers,
"Where is the enemy?" The man replied, "I don't know. We're your
friends." There was nothing left to do but ride back home. The duke was disarmed by
goodness and innocence.

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions |

Spurgeon's Morning for January 26 |
Spurgeon's Evening January 26 |
"Your heavenly Father." - Matthew 6:26 |
"All they that heard it wondered at those things." - Luke 2:18 |
God's people are doubly his children, they are his offspring by creation, and they are his sons by adoption in Christ. Hence they are privileged to call him, "Our Father which art in heaven." Father! Oh, what precious word is that. |
We must not cease to wonder at the great marvels of our God. It would be very difficult to draw a line between holy wonder and real worship; for when the soul is overwhelmed with the majesty of God's glory, though it may not express itself in song, or even utter its voice with bowed head in humble prayer, yet it silently adores. |

... by Pat Nordman Colossians 3:23
Are
we angry with someone? Do we feel another's hostility? Is there a
rupture of any kind with another person for whom our dear Jesus died? Have we a breach of
love or confidence that we need to repair? Are we allowing misunderstandings to stand in
the way of happiness, our own and another's? Jesus could have easily let His
beloved disciples wash their own feet. Peter in his human pride said to Jesus, "No,
you shall never wash my feet." V.8. But Jesus lovingly explained to Peter that,
unless He washed his feet, Peter would have no part with Him. When He was finished, Jesus
asked them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" V.12. Could they--or
we--possibly understand what He has done for us all in this supreme act of love and
humility? Religion

An
Example
"Whatever you do, work at
it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men"
"I have set before you an example. . ." What a mean service
to render to lowly men, washing their feet! And yet this is not how Jesus viewed it at
all. "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve" even the man who
was to betray Him! O! what a lesson there is here in this grand action by our Creator and
Redeemer! It defies sinful imagination but fires up a restored and Spirit-filled
imagination to go to that person who irritates and angers us and kneel before him or her
and immerse their feet--and our own hurting and hating heart--in the cleansing water. How
on earth can we continue to harbor bitterness in our hearts after doing this, even if only
in our imagination? By beholding our Jesus doing it for us, and our doing it for others,
then we can love them with His love.
The thought of His humble action and His great love is overwhelming.
May we in spirit and in Spirit follow His example.
Although we cannot
do it all, much as some of us would like to do much more, we can do our fragment of the
whole work.
