Think And Thank Prairie Overcomer |

This is part 11 of 14 facts associated with THANKSGIVING. This is an all American holiday. Although the US and Canada celebrate the day on different dates, the purpose is the same. |
Part 11 The Traditional Main Dish?: The lowly turkey, and not the lordly bald eagle, ought to have been depicted on the Great Seal of the United States! So stated Benjamin Franklin. The outspoken Franklin wrote to his daughter: "I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country. It is a bird of bad moral character. He is generally poor and often lousy. He is a rank coward." His choice for the honor was the turkey which he described as "a bird of courage (who) would not hesitate to attack a grenadier of the British guards who would presume to invade his farmyard with a Red Coat on." Just think! We would then be deprived of Thanksgiving
turkeyfor it would hardly be appropriate to devour the symbol of our country. And
who would want roasted bald eagle as a substituteor a turkey mounted over the
fireplace? |
