A guide to the staple diet of college students everywhere

Packing this bowl will not give you cancer

At first thought, one might assume that "a bowl is a bowl." Bowls are often taken for granted. Yet they offer many benefits to cereal eaters worldwide. A bowl keeps the cereal in a close pile- making spooning easier. A bowl keeps milk from pouring onto the television-room coffee table or, worse, our lap.

Careful thought should be taken in selecting a bowl. There are many factors that should be considered and many different types of bowl that may be used. Here are a few:

Kinds of Bowls:

  • The SmallBowl

  • Clear Glass

  • Straw-equipped

  • Tupperware

  • 32 oz. Taco Bell cup

  • Metal

SmallBowl

Many people feel that the SmallBowl is useless stating that such a contraption will never suffice their appetite. However, SmallBowl are not truly for eating cereal. The true purpose of a SmallBowl is to deter bad guests from eating too much of your food.

We all know the feeling. You were a little saucy during your monthly grocery shopping and you decided to spurge a little and treat your self to a box of Lucky Charms. After just one bowl of this rare delicacy, a friend comes over. Of course s/he goes through your cupboards and what do you know? "Oh Lucky Charms!" Without even asking, and at your fright, your quest snakes the box from the cupboard.

Normally your guest's bowl of those Luck Charms would be that last that you would see. However, with a SmallBowl strategically placed in the cupboard you can delight your guest by even pouring s/he a bowl for her/him. Luckily for you (no pun intended) their greed won't lead to the last your treasure. For you have foiled their craving and put the box away before they even know how little of that treat they are getting.

There should be at least one SmallBowl in every household.

Clear glass bowl

The clear glass bowl was ingeniously designed to see through while drinking milk from the bowl. By using a clear glass bowl, one can drink milk from the cereal bowl while simultaneously watching TV or even driving (not recommended).

However, if milk drinking is what you want a bowl with a built-in straw is an option that should be considered. There are many straw-equipped bowls on the market these days. Some are made of plastic. Some are made of clay. Just look around and purchase the one that suits your fancy.

Tupperware

Tupperware offers many plusses (and options) to cereal eaters. The obvious reason to use a Tupperware bowl is for its near indestructible capabilities. The real reason that Tupperware was designed, however, was to keep things fresh. Many people use Tupperware for taking foods on travel and cereal is certainly and option. For those on-the-go days cereal and milk can be poured into a Tupperware bowl and sealed with a lid.

If your travels will take you very far, though, be sure to have a cereal that stays crunchy for a long time. Another option would be to purchase milk in a one-quart carton when you get there. For those Tupperware freaks, bring milk with you from home!

32 oz. plastic cup

The 32 oz. Plastic cup, although it offers many benefits, once held cult status among high school and college aged adolescents, but it may soon go the way of the do-do bird. 32 oz. Plastic cups are give away at fast food restaurants everywhere, but in today's throw away society, we rarely see these durable tools reused.

A true cereal eater knows that there are many reasons to use a 32 oz plastic cup when feasting on cereal. Like the Tupperware, a plastic cup will not break if accidentally dropped. Its narrow diameter offers access to a firm grip, while the deep volume caries enough cereal to fill even a large tummy. Cereal etiquette shows that eating with a 32 oz. plastic cup does not require the use of spoon- a big plus for people who prefer the simple life with few accessories.

Metal bowl

Metal bowls are hard to find these days. It is often forgotten why these were ever invented although, some people swear by the metal bowl. They are often looked down upon because of the noisy "clang" of metal on metal. One way to alleviate this is to use a plastic spoon. In any case, if you choose to go with a metal bowl, either have table to set the bowl on or wear mittens because these types of bowls conduct the cold of the milk very easily.
