Calling all Current and Prospective Lancer Stroke and Turn Officials:
WE NEED YOU -- the select, the proud, and hopefully not the few! If you have served as an official in the past, have ever thought about being an official, or have no idea what I am even talking about, then this message is for you.
Volunteer Officials are needed at every meet to make sure that the meet goes according to plan, that the swimmers have a fair and equal opportunity to compete, and remain safe while competing. Even if you have no experience, PWSL conducts two free clinics each spring. In order to serve as an official, whether new to this or a "veteran," you need to attend one of the clinics. The clinics this year will be:
Saturday June 4, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Signal Hill Elementary School or Tuesday June 14th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Signal Hill Elementary School.
If you are interested in serving as an Official, please e-mail Terry Leslie, our Head Referee, at tleslie1@comcast.net. All returning Officials should e-mail him also.
Why should you consider serving as an official? Terry has developed a "Top 10 Reasons to be a Stroke and Turn Official."
- You get to join a team just like your kids -- the officials' team.
- You will have the best seat in the house -- the edge of the pool.
- This is not a difficult job and the clinic covers the strokes very well.
- If you learn the strokes, you are better able to help your child.
- Once you are an official, you are committed for life. Okay, maybe not for life, but you are better able to help the Lancers now and in the future.
- We need all the help we can get. The more help, the easier the job.
- You make friends with other officials across the league.
- You may get to wear a headset (and probably not be able to hear anything -- ask Lisa Bushmire).
- You get free coffee, and usually food from concessions and water brought to you poolside!
- We have as much fun as the kids at the meets!
If you have any questions about serving as an official, please contact either Terry or Rod Fillinger at
Roderick.Fillinger@verizon.net.
We will gladly answer as many questions as you have in our efforts to recruit you!
