This page will contain Coach Germans thoughts on the previous game played, the next game coming up, as well as news and notes about the program.
NOTES 11/14/98
The first news is bad. Brad Cadwallader, who averaged 12 ppg and 8 rpg, will be sidelined at least the first half of the year with a torn acl. Also, DeSmet transfer Brad Buss appears to be ineligible for varsity action until second semester.
The good news is the team is practicing well and there have been some pleasant surprises so far. Also, we received the #3 seed at the Borgia tournament, and we are in the bracket opposite Borgia and University City.
WASHINGTON 11/25/98
We played a good game defeating Washington 71-60 yesterday. I thought we shot the ball pretty well athough not exceptionally well. Mike Harting had 8 assist and 0 turnovers. JR Ruhl had 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Tyson Rothermich had 22 points. Josh Beeson had 22 points. Matt Imgrund had 12 points and 1 cut chin. It was a total team effort as our bench players gave us some good minutes also. Next up is a very good Union team tonight. If we do a better job on the boards and finish our lay-ups and FT, its a game we can win.
UNION 11/26/98
Like all coaches I look at the final score sometimes too much. We lost this game 53-55, but 2 good things came out of it. The first is that we should now realize that we must play hard at all times, and attack pressure with pressure. Second, hopefully we realize we have a pretty good team now. Sometimes I think we're looking forward too much to getting Brad and Brad and we are just biding time until then. We outplayed a good Union team in the 2nd half with what we have. Great efforts by sophmores Matt Beeson and Adam Strunk off the bench! This Berkley game will be important in telling me something about our character.
BERKLEY 11/28/98
We capped off a good tournament tonight by defeating Berkley 66-59 for 3rd place. We played 5 good halves of basketball out of 6 during this tourney. This win really makes me feel good about things to come as this was a real gut check for us. We had a lot of reasons not to win but we did anyway. Matt Beeson had 19 and we got good all around performances by JR Ruhl, Tyson Rothermich and Josh Beeson. Next up is Jeff City Helias at home tuesday.
JEFF CITY HELIAS 12/1/98
I was happy with the effort level in this game. I thought we played hard and did some good things. They shot the ball well, they are a good team, and we shot the ball poorly (32%). We still need to work hard offensively on moving without the ball and helping on the boards.
WENTZVILLE 12/4/98
This was a very disappointing loss. It was a game we should have won. We shot the ball extremely poorly and the only way to make up for that is to hit the offensive boards. We had 1 at half-time against a very small team. We were 3 for 13 from the lane in the first half. Because we were behind they were able to spread things out in the second half. We didn't come out to play and I guess I have to take some of the blame. I thought we played hard just not very well. We are still searching for the right combination to provide some sort of inside scoring. The good sportsmanship of the team was marred by two technicals on Coach German who not only set a bad example and hurt the team this game, but now must miss the next game also. Who knows, that may help!
FT ZUMWALT NORTH 12/8/98
Another disappointing loss. I watched the film and once again we had no low post offense, got beat on the boards, and lost a close game. Going 6/16 from the line didn't help. We got pretty good shots, just couldn't finish anything. Right now we don't have anyone other than Matt Beeson, Mike Harting, and Tyson Rothermich competing hard enough for us to overcome our poor shooting. Right now basketball is not important enough to the rest of the guys. I hope they are not waiting around for Brad and Brad. You have to get ready for district play throughout the year, not the week before.
WRIGHT CITY 12/11/98
A lot of good things happened in this game. Josh Beeson came back to life. Mike Harting had 8 assist and 1 turnover. Matt Beeson continued his good play. I thought we played hard for 4 quarters. Sometimes its easy to let up in games like this but we didn't at any time. Hopefully this will be a continuing trend. Next friday against Warrenton is going to be a very important game for us. They are a district team, the number 1 seed in our tournament, and a loss last year that stuck in our crawl. We were 3/15 from 3-point range against Wright City, and this has to improve for us to be as successful as we want to be.
NOTES 12/12/98
Brad Cadwallader has been cleared to run, and will see the doctor again Dec. 28. At this time he will hopefully be cleared to begin practice. Brad Buss will be eligible to play varsity on Jan. 20, making his first game Jan.22 versus SLUH.
WARRENTON 12/18/98
What a great win! Despite losing Mike Harting to a dislocated finger the night before the game, shooting 4/16 from 3-pt range, giving up 8 3's, our leading scorer Tyson Rothermich scoring 3 points, and shooting poorly from the line down the stretch, we found a way to win. This was a great effort from JR Ruhl and Josh Beeson individually and good efforts off the bench by everyone. At times we had 3 sophmores on the floor and we never lost our composure. This will do nothing but help us later in the season.
Wright City 12/26/98
The players really came out and played hard in this game. The seniors are showing great leadership and the underclassman(Strunk, Sanders) are improving greatly.
Elsberry 12/28/98
Another great win for a number of reasons. One is we are still playing very hard. Two is that they were a very good team. Three is we didn't lose our composure after giving up a big lead. The difference was our bench out played their bench. The seniors continue to make the big plays and the youngsters continue to improve.
Warrenton 12/29/98
Another good win for us. We jumped out to a big lead but we knew Warrenton wouldn't quit. We struggled a little against the zone but managed to find other ways to score and pull out the win. It's great because we aren't shooting it very well, we still haven't established a great low post game, and yet we're still winning. That tells you something about the defense and effort level of the kids.
NOTES 12/28/98
Brad Cadwallader is out for another month. This puts an end to the expected return for the second half of the season. He may be able to play at district.
NOTES 1/14/99
Josh Beeson tore his MCL and will be out for at least 2-3 weeks. Brad Buss has strained ligaments in his knee and is day to day. If it weren't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all.
Priory 1/15/99
We played a great first half. With Josh out, Mike playing his first game in a month, and our lack of practice time, we were up 23 at half. The 2nd half was ugly which can be expected I guess. We need someone to take care of the ball and lead us from the guard spot late in the game. Josh did that but now Mike or Tim need to step up.
Francis Howell North 1/19/99
What a great effort! We came up short but everyone played their butt off. A little lull at the start of the 4th quarter cost us the game but the kids never gave up despite being outmanned. We needed to do a better job checking out. Tyson was 9/11 from 3-point range and Matt Beeson had 22 points, 5 assist, and 5 steals. I was really proud of everyone.
SLUH 1/22/99
This was a good effort but not a great one. The kids played hard and we shot the ball pretty well but we didn't block out against a team not much bigger than us, and our defense was pretty bad. We spend a lot of practice time defending the pick and roll and yet we acted like we had never seen one before. Our pressure was negated because our rotations were so bad. I guess we thats my fault from our practices this week. I thought we had them down. The kids played hard and never gave up and I thought we did some real good things offensively. We need to buckle down and win this tournament this next week to get our confidence back after 2 straight losses.
Silex 1/26/99
What a great first half! The kids really came out fired up and got us a 23 point lead by half-time. We were playing without Matt Beeson, who is out 2 weeks because of grades, and Mike Harting who had to miss the game for personal reasons. Mike should be back for the next game. We again really played hard and thats all you can ask for as a coach. The scoring was very distributed with alot of guys getting playing time as we only had 8 players. Everyone scored with 4 people in double figures and 2 more with 8. Our continuity on offense wasn't as good as its been, (with new players every week, what do you expect!), but the kids still did a good job.
Bowling Green 1/28/99
The positives are that we found a way to win a close game on the road in front of a hostile crowd, and we played a great first quarter. We shot 18/54 from the field and 6/14 from the line. A lot of those shots were good shots. Our defensive rotations were not good after the first quarter. We have a couple of new guys doing some fundemental things wrong that need to get corrected if they are going to play when Matt and Josh get back. I think that everyone just had a bad game on the same night. We need to improve dramatically to win saturday, but I think we will.
Elsberry 1/30/99
This was a strange game. We didn't play bad but we didn't play good. It didn't feel like a championship game. The enthusiasm and effort level just wasn't there. Their 6'7" sophmore just dominated us inside scoring 20 pts. Our low post defense was bad. We are making the same mistakes over and over down there. Adam strunk had a big game with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and a pretty good job on the defensive end. Tyson hit 5 3's but no one else found a way to score. We didn't run like we wanted to and we didn't create turnovers like we wanted to. I'm dissapointed in our play the last 2 1/2 games and hope we snap out of it before next week or we will go 0-8 over the next 3 weeks as we have no easy games left. Josh Beeson played a little in the 2nd half but didn't/couldn't? play hard.
Duchesne 2/2/99
We lost. Why? We led almost the entire game but went 3/8 from the line in the fourth quarter. A couple of these were front end of 1 and 1's. They went 21/24 from the line, we went 14/22. They hit 5 3's. We missed some good shots. They officials were bad and that technical to start overtime put us down 6, 3 seconds into overtime. They then just spread it out and hit their free throws. Now the real reason. We are not doing the job defensively. We are not rebounding well enough and we are getting beat off the dribble a lot. This is where big games and championships are won. We were there but we are not now. Our offensive execution wasn't very good at times but that is expected with the juggling lineups. The defense should be there no matter who is in the game. WE WILL GET BETTER!!!!
Whitfield 2/4/99
We didn't play very well. We made a ton of unforced turnovers for absolutely no reason. They didn't press or trap much at all and we just threw it away. They got tons of second shots and that just killed us in the second half. Strunk had 11 rebounds and nobody else had more than 5. Josh Beeson played some and scored 20 points but he still can't guard or drive yet. 18 of those points were on 3-pointers. Tim Sanders missed the game due to a death in the family. Adam Strunk, 9 points and 11 rebounds, played pretty good as well as Mike Harting, who probably had his best game of the year with 13 points and 10 assist. Defensively we really miss Matt and Josh Beeson. Buss fouled out again. Tyson Rothermich went 0-11 for the game. We need to win our next 3 games.
Bowling Green 2/6/99
I missed this game as I was in Branson at the Miss USA pageant. From watching the film, we played very poor defensively. This is a new low. I'm pretending like it didn't happen.
St. Charles West 2/9/99
What a great win! This was the SDHS team of old. We went to a 4 guard lineup and really won the game with a defense. A great job by everyone. Matt Beeson played and even though he was 2/11 on layups, his defense and rebounding and hustle really help us out. Josh Beeson played a little more aggressively as he slowly comes back from the knee injury. Brad Buss played great and JR did a good job battling a 6'8" division 1 player in the paint. The only bad note is Mike Harting dislocated his elbow early in the game and is out for the season.
Principia 2/9/99
Another good effort by the team. With Mike Harting out and Adam Strunk missing for a game due to sickness, we still played very hard. The Pricipia coach was very complimentary after the game. He said he thought they were a pretty good defensive squad but that we were definitly a notch above that. Going with 4 guards just seems to give us a lot more energy during the game. We have scored over 70 points 2 games in a row versus quality opponents and I think most of that comes from our defense. We also shot the ball well from the outside as we were 7/15 from 3-pt range and 20/24 from the line. Good shooting overcomes a lot of other problems. We are in for a tough week but I just hope we continue to play hard like we did the first 14 games of the season and the last 2. Hopefully we are getting ready for district play. Josh Beeson had 26 points, 5 assist, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds as he is rounding back into mid-season form. This was a good team effort all around.
Ft. Zumwalt South 2/16/99
Not a bad effort. Not a good effort. This one fell somewhere in-between. We got outrebounded 38-16, consequently they got 11 more shots than we did. This combined with poor free throw shooting did us in. JR had 2 rebounds and Josh had 2 (both offensive), as we gave up 21 offensive rebounds. Other than scoring, our seniors gave us very little in effort, defense, or rebounding. FZ South is a good team and we played them tough but to get as far as I would like to get in state, we will have to play better. The kids didn't give up when falling behind and that's a good sign. Great game by Brad Buss with a lot of effort, 20 points, 4 steals, and 5 assist. I think things will fall back into place tonight versus St. Charles as I expect everyone will come ready to play.
St. Charles 2/17/99
I don't want to talk about this game. Probably the worst of the year that I was at. Josh and Tyson were the only two who accomplished anything.
Borgia 2/19/99
We didn't play that bad. It was a very entertaining game to watch I'm sure. We rebounded pretty well, we shot it ok (good the first half, not so good in the second), and we executed the game plan pretty well. We turned it over to much and their guards just shot the heck out of the ball. They were 14/29 from 3-pt range. We should of put more pressure on the ball and not worried about getting beat off the dribble since we had 3 people in the lane anyways.
Warrenton 2/25/99
Well the season is over. I thought Brad Buss and Josh Beeson went out as warriors. Unfortunetly they were on their own. Warrenton shot the ball very well and we didn't. They deserved to win. The difference between this game and Borgia was, Borgia shot from deep with a hand in their face, Warrenton shot wide open shots at the line. I couldn't explain why. We shouldn't have pressed as much as I think that led to more open 3's. Back to Homepage
