How is to play pétanque?

Pétanque is played by two teams, which may be 1 player (tête à tête), 2 players (doublette) or 3 players (triplette) on each team. For tête à tête and doublette each player plays with three boules, for triplette with two boules.
The first team to play is either the one which lost the last game, or one decided by the toss of a coin.
One player of the starting team makes a circle approx. 35 to 50 cm diameter on the ground and places themselves in the circle with both feet (fr: pieds tanqué - which is the origin of the name of the game). From there he or she throws the jack (cochonnet) a distance of 6 to 10 meters. The first player then tries to throw one of his or her boules as close as possible to the jack.
Then the other team tries. If it succeeds in bringing one of its boules closer than the first team, the first team tries again, etc.. Each team must continue to play until it places a boule better than the opposing team, or until all its boules are thrown.
If a team has no more boules, the other team may place their remaining boules as well as possible.
Once all boules are played, the better team receives as many points as they have boules placed better than the best boule of the opposing team. Thus a round is terminated.

The team which won the round now begins the next round. The first team to make 13 points is the winner of the game.

When playing the boules, practically everything is permitted: a high or lower throw, "put", roll, the shooting-away of boules of the opposing team or even the jack. Therefore tactics play a large role in the game as well as individual skill.
